Actuary Cover Letter Writing Tips

Open with a strong introduction

If you’re applying for a position in the actuarial field, your cover letter introduction is essential to standing out from other candidates.

When crafting a strong introduction, it’s important to highlight what sets you apart from other candidates. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Lead with an impressive accomplishment or strong professional skills. For example, mention how you were named Actuarial Manager of the Year.
  • Show employers how you’ll contribute positively to the company. Talk about how you’ll make an impact on customers and coworkers.
  • Use numbers when quantifying your skills. Employers will be impressed if you have experience in managing a team of actuaries or producing actuarial reports for clients.
Emphasize your math skills

Employers want to know that you have the math skills to analyze and solve complicated equations, as well as communicate your findings with clients accurately.

Talk about your math skills in your cover letter and how you’ve developed them, either through classes or by working in a similar role.

For example, state that you were a mathematics major in college and how you use advanced math concepts every day at work.

As an actuary, you know that numbers are the most important factor in any decision.

So, to show the hiring manager how you’ll be a valuable asset to their company, provide examples of your accomplishments and use numbers to back them up.

Here are some examples of how to quantify your achievements on your cover letter:

  • Reduced operational costs by $200,000 annually by improving workflow efficiency
  • Developed a model that identified more than $3 million in potential savings for our company by implementing cost-saving measures
  • Predictively modeled more than 1 million unique customer interactions for our clients
Research the company

You can write a generic cover letter and use it for all the companies you’re applying to, but it will be more effective if you research the company you are applying to.

First, research the company’s history and future goals. You can use this information to tailor your cover letter. Second, research the company’s culture. This will allow you to write a cover letter that will match the company’s expectations.

For example, if the company values integrity and transparency, then you should mention how you strive to do the same. Employers can tell if you’ve done your research, so don’t give them any reason to doubt your ability to be a successful employee.
