Are you certified as an aesthetic nurse practitioner?

Example: “I am currently working toward my aesthetic nurse practitioner certification through the American Academy of Aesthetic Nurse Practitioners. I started the process two years ago and should be finished by next year. My goal is to always stay up-to-date with continuing education courses so that I can maintain my certification.”

What are the most common aesthetic procedures you perform?

This question can help the interviewer determine your experience with aesthetic procedures. It also helps them understand what you might be able to contribute to their team. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention a few of the most common procedures you perform and why they are important.

Example: “I have extensive experience performing chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments. These three procedures are some of the most common I’ve performed in my previous roles because they’re all effective at improving skin tone and texture. Chemical peels can improve fine lines and wrinkles while brightening the complexion. Microdermabrasion is great for removing dead skin cells and revealing new, healthy ones. Laser treatments can reduce redness and pigmentation issues.”

How do you determine the best treatment plan for your patients?

This question can help the interviewer understand how you approach your work and make decisions. Use examples from previous experience to show that you consider all aspects of a patient’s health, including their medical history, current conditions and goals for treatment.

Example: “I always start by listening to my patients’ concerns and learning about their goals for treatment. I also take into account any other factors that may affect their treatment plan, such as their budget or insurance coverage. For example, when working with a new patient who wanted to reduce the appearance of her scars, I considered her age, skin type and overall health before recommending a series of treatments using different methods.”

What is your process for educating patients before and after a cosmetic procedure?

The interviewer may ask you this question to understand how you educate patients about the procedures you perform and what your expectations are for their behavior before, during and after a procedure. Use examples from past experiences to explain how you prepare patients for treatment and ensure they have all of the information they need to feel comfortable with the process.

Example: “I always start by explaining the entire cosmetic procedure to my patient so that they know exactly what to expect when they come in for their appointment. I also make sure they understand any risks or side effects associated with the procedure and give them instructions on how to care for themselves both immediately following the procedure and over the next few days. For example, I tell them not to apply makeup or sunscreen for at least 24 hours after the procedure.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to manage a patient’s post-procedure complications.

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your ability to handle challenging situations. In your answer, you can describe how you handled the situation and what steps you took to resolve it.

Example: “I once had a patient who was experiencing severe pain after her laser treatment. I asked her about any other symptoms she was having, such as nausea or vomiting, and if she had taken any medication for the pain. She told me that she hadn’t taken anything because she didn’t have any with her. I explained to her that we keep some over-the-counter medications in our office, so she could take one of those until she got home. After taking the medication, she felt better and continued with her day.”

If a patient wanted to undergo a cosmetic procedure that you felt would not improve their appearance, how would you handle the situation?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your ability to handle conflict and difficult situations. In your answer, try to show that you can be empathetic while also standing by your professional opinion.

Example: “If a patient asked me to perform a procedure I felt would not improve their appearance, I would first explain why I feel the way I do. If they still insisted on going through with the procedure, I would refer them to another aesthetic nurse practitioner who might be willing to perform it.”

What would you do if a patient was unhappy with the results of a cosmetic procedure?

This question can help interviewers understand how you handle conflict and disappointment. It also helps them determine if you have the skills to communicate effectively with patients who are unhappy about their results. In your answer, try to show that you value honesty and empathy when handling these situations.

Example: “I would first ask the patient what they didn’t like about the procedure and why. I would then explain to them exactly what went wrong during the procedure and how it could be fixed. If a patient is unhappy with the results of a procedure, I always offer to fix it for free or at a discounted price. This shows the patient that I care about their happiness and want to make sure they leave our office happy.”

How well do you work with other medical professionals to provide holistic care to your patients?

Example: “I believe it is important to work with other medical professionals to provide holistic care to my patients. I have worked alongside many different types of medical professionals, including physicians, surgeons, physical therapists and dieticians, and I always strive to communicate effectively with them so we can all work together to meet our patient’s needs. For example, when working with a surgeon on a patient who was recovering from knee surgery, I asked about their dietary restrictions and ensured they understood what exercises they could do after their procedure.”

Do you have experience working with patients who have special needs or who speak a different language?

Interviewers may ask this question to see if you have experience working with patients who might need extra support or attention. They want to know that you can provide compassionate care and ensure the patient understands what’s happening during their treatment. In your answer, try to highlight how you helped these patients feel comfortable and supported while also ensuring they received high-quality care.

Example: “I’ve worked in a clinic where we had many bilingual staff members, so I’m used to communicating with patients who speak different languages. However, I always make sure to get an interpreter for any patients who don’t speak English. I find it helpful to learn some basic phrases in other languages so I can greet them and explain procedures as needed.

In my last position, I worked with a patient who had special needs. She was nonverbal and required assistance from her family members at all times. I made sure to communicate clearly with her caregivers about each step of her treatment plan and asked them questions when she didn’t respond. This allowed me to understand exactly what she needed and ensured she got the best care possible.”

When performing a cosmetic procedure, how do you maintain a calm and reassuring demeanor?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with patients. Your answer should demonstrate that you can remain calm, confident and empathetic when interacting with patients during a procedure.

Example: “I find it important to maintain a calm demeanor while performing cosmetic procedures because I want my patient to feel safe and comfortable. When I am working on a patient, I try to make sure they know exactly what I’m doing at all times so they understand the process and don’t become anxious or nervous. I also use positive language and affirmations to help keep my patient relaxed.”

We want to be known for having kind and compassionate aesthetic nurse practitioners. How would you describe your personality and demeanor in this role?

This question is an opportunity to show the interviewer your interpersonal skills and how you would interact with patients. It’s important to be honest in your answer, but also highlight any specific personality traits that make you a good aesthetic nurse practitioner.

Example: “I am very empathetic and compassionate when interacting with patients. I always try to put myself in their shoes and understand what they’re going through. This helps me communicate effectively with them and provide them with the best care possible. I’m also very patient and understanding, which makes it easier for patients to feel comfortable talking about their concerns.”

Describe your experience performing laser hair removal.

What makes you qualified to perform cosmetic surgery procedures?

Example: “I am a certified nurse practitioner with two years of experience working as an aesthetic nurse practitioner. I also hold a certification in microdermabrasion from the American Academy of Aesthetic Nursing. In my previous role, I performed many different types of cosmetic procedures including chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.”

Which aesthetic nurse practitioner role do you prefer: working in a clinic or working in the field?

This question helps employers understand your preferences and how you might fit into their organization. If you have experience in both settings, explain which one you prefer and why.

Example: “I’ve worked in a clinic setting for the past five years, but I also did field work during my training. I enjoy both environments because they offer different challenges. In a clinic, I get to see patients on a regular basis and develop long-term relationships with them. Working in the field is more challenging because I’m constantly meeting new people and learning about their needs. However, I find that working in the field gives me valuable insight into what patients want from aesthetic procedures.”

What do you think is the most important aspect of this role?

This question is a great way to show the interviewer that you have done your research on this role and understand what it entails. When answering, make sure to highlight an aspect of aesthetic nursing that you are passionate about and can speak to in detail.

Example: “I think the most important part of being an aesthetic nurse practitioner is educating patients on how they can maintain their skin health at home. I love helping people feel confident in their appearance by removing unwanted marks or blemishes, but I also want them to know that there are ways for them to keep their skin looking healthy between appointments. This helps me build long-lasting relationships with my clients.”

How often do you perform cosmetic procedures?

This question can help interviewers understand your experience with cosmetic procedures. If you have a lot of experience, it can show that you are comfortable performing these types of procedures and may be able to do so in the future. When answering this question, try to focus on how much experience you have rather than what specific procedures you perform.

Example: “I’ve performed several different cosmetic procedures throughout my career as an aesthetic nurse practitioner. I regularly perform microdermabrasion, chemical peels and laser hair removal. In addition, I also offer Botox injections and fillers for patients who want more natural-looking results.”

There is a recall on the device you typically use for a cosmetic procedure. How do you handle the situation?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving skills and ability to adapt. You can answer this question by describing a time you had to use a different device for a procedure, how you handled the situation and what steps you took to ensure the patient was comfortable during the procedure.

Example: “I once used a device that had a recall on it. I immediately informed my patients of the recall and offered them the option to reschedule or have me perform the procedure using another device. Most of my patients chose to stay with me because they trusted me as their aesthetic nurse practitioner. I performed the procedure using a different device and ensured my patients were comfortable throughout the entire process.”
