If you’re looking to start or advance your career in animation, you’ll need to ace your interview. One way to do that is to be prepared for the most common animator interview questions. Are you comfortable working on multiple projects at once?

Animators often work on multiple projects at once, so the interviewer wants to know if you can handle this type of multitasking. Your answer should show that you are organized and have experience working under pressure.

One project was a short film for a client, another was a video game and the third was a television commercial. What are some of your favorite animated characters and why?

What is your process for creating a character design?

How well do you work under pressure?

What do you think is the most important aspect of an animated production?

This question is a great way to see how you prioritize your work. It also shows the interviewer what skills and abilities are most important to you as an animator. When answering this question, it can be helpful to think about which aspects of animation you enjoy the most or find the most challenging.

Example: “I believe that the most important aspect of any animated production is the story. If the story isn’t compelling, then the audience won’t care about the characters or the visuals. I’ve worked on projects where we had to scrap entire scenes because they didn’t fit with the overall narrative. This was always frustrating, but I learned from those experiences that it’s better to take more time developing the story than rush through production.”

How often do you update your portfolio?

Animators need to stay up-to-date on the latest animation trends and software. Employers ask this question to make sure you’re committed to your craft and are always learning new things. In your answer, explain that you have a passion for animation and will continue to update your portfolio as you learn more about the industry.

Example: “I am constantly updating my portfolio with new projects I’ve worked on. I love animating so much that I’m always looking for ways to improve my skills. I recently took an online course on 3D modeling and learned how to create characters from scratch. I plan to add these models to my portfolio soon.”

There is a mistake in one of your scenes. How do you handle it?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving skills and ability to make quick decisions. You can answer this question by describing a time when you had to fix a mistake in one of your scenes, the steps you took to do so and how it helped you learn from the experience.

Example: “In my last role as an animator, I was working on a scene where there were two characters talking to each other. One character was supposed to be sitting down while the other stood up. However, I accidentally animated the standing character to sit down instead. When I realized my mistake, I immediately fixed it by deleting the entire sequence and reanimating the correct actions.”
