Architects and mechanical engineers are both professionals who design and oversee the construction of buildings and other structures. Though they share some similarities, there are several key differences between these two careers. What is an Architect?

Architects are responsible for the design of buildings and other structures. They work with clients to determine the purpose and function of the structure, and then they create a plan that meets those needs. Architects consider the location of the structure, the materials that will be used to build it, the budget for the project, and any relevant zoning laws or building codes. Once the plan is approved, Architects oversee the construction process to ensure that the structure is built according to their specifications. After the structure is completed, Architects may also be involved in its maintenance and repair.

What is a Mechanical Engineer?

Mechanical Engineers design, develop, test and oversee the production of mechanical devices, including tools, engines and machines. They work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing and energy. Mechanical Engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create and analyze designs. They also use finite element analysis (FEA) to test the strength and durability of their designs. Mechanical Engineers work with other engineers and technicians to develop prototypes and test products. They also work with project managers to develop budgets and schedules for product development.

Job Duties

One of the biggest differences between an architect and a mechanical engineer is the type of duties each professional carries out. Architects are responsible for designing buildings, which involves analyzing client needs, researching design trends and considering aesthetic preferences. They then use CAD software to create detailed blueprints of the structures, which they share with clients for feedback. In addition, architects ensure that construction crews follow their instructions by conducting site inspections.

In contrast, mechanical engineers focus primarily on engineering solutions for problems in existing structures. For example, they may redesign ventilation systems or update energy sources to reduce operating costs for facilities. Mechanical engineers also conduct research and development projects, but these efforts typically support their work on current projects rather than serving as the basis for finished products.

Job Requirements

Architects usually pursue at least a bachelor’s degree to work in the field. A Bachelor of Architecture typically takes five years to complete. Some architects also opt to earn a Master of Architecture, which can take five additional years to earn. Most of these programs include coursework on fundamental topics like the history of architecture and architectural theories and more advanced subjects like structural design and CAD.

To enter the construction engineering field, candidates typically earn a college degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). While some engineers hold only a bachelor’s degree, many ambitious professionals decide to earn a master’s degree, too, so they can pursue high-level positions. They can earn their degrees in civil engineering, architecture, design or a related field.

Work Environment

Mechanical engineers typically work in an office environment, but they may also travel to construction sites. They often spend time on construction sites observing the progress of projects and ensuring that their designs are being implemented correctly.

Both architects and mechanical engineers need to have problem-solving skills. An architect needs technical skills to perform their job, including CAD software, advanced mathematics, linear systems and analysis and electrical schematics. A mechanical engineer also needs technical knowledge, but they need to know more basic information about how machines and systems work. Both of these professionals need to have the ability to follow safety protocols because they are often working with dangerous materials.

While an architect uses communication skills when they are creating reports of their research, corresponding with other architects and colleagues and developing blueprints for their products, they are not necessarily going to be interacting with customers directly. A mechanical engineer is going to need interpersonal skills because they will most likely be interacting with people on a daily basis while they assist customers with solving machine or system issues.

Mechanical engineers earn an average salary of $91,492 per year, while architects earn an average salary of $87,570 per year. Both of these average salaries may vary depending on the size of the company at which you work, location of your job and the level of experience you have prior to pursuing either position.
