Asphalt workers are responsible for many aspects of the construction process. They’re the ones who dig holes to install underground pipes and cables, spread layers of hot asphalt over roadways, and more. They’re also the ones who repair potholes and other road defects when they’re identified.
As an aspiring asphalt worker, you’ll need a resume that showcases your skills and experience in this industry. Here are some tips and an example resume that will help you write yours.
Here’s how to write an resume of your own.
Bullet points are the most important part of your resume because they’re the first thing recruiters will read. And if they’re boring or vague, they’ll be the only thing they remember.
But if you use them to describe specific accomplishments, they’ll be much more memorable—and impressive! So rather than saying you “installed asphalt,” you could say you “installed 1,000 square feet of new asphalt pavement in parking lot, ensuring smooth surface and proper compaction according to city code.”
The second bullet point is much more specific and descriptive, which makes it much more interesting to read. And it also provides a quantifiable measure of the work you did—1,000 square feet of new asphalt pavement!
When you apply for a job as an asphalt worker, your resume is likely to be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. These programs look for certain terms related to the job, like “paving” or “construction,” in order to determine whether your work history is a match for the job you’ve applied to. If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right keywords, the ATS might disqualify you from further consideration.
To make sure your resume makes it past the ATS, focus on including relevant keywords throughout all sections of your application. Here are some of the most commonly used keywords for asphalt workers:
Asphalt workers need to be proficient in the use of a variety of tools and equipment in order to do their jobs effectively. This might include experience with paving machines, compaction equipment, and other tools used in the construction of asphalt surfaces. Additionally, asphalt workers need to have a solid understanding of the materials they are working with and how to properly mix and apply them.
