How to Write an Assistant Controller Resume

Here’s how to write an assistant controller resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

When it comes to writing bullet points, the more specific you can be, the better. Rather than saying you “managed payroll,” you could say that you “managed payroll for 200+ employees across five locations, ensuring timely and accurate processing of $2 million in payroll each month.”

The second bullet point is much more powerful because it provides specific details about what you did and the results of your work. It also provides a quantifiable measure of the impact of your work—in this case, $2 million in payroll each month.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you apply for a job as a controller, your resume is usually entered into an applicant tracking system (ATS). This system will scan your resume for certain keywords related to the job, like “financial reporting” or “account reconciliation.” If your resume doesn’t have enough of the right terms, the ATS might not forward it to a recruiter.

To increase your chances of getting an interview, make sure to include keywords throughout your resume. You can find a list of commonly used keywords below:

  • Accounting
  • Financial Reporting
  • Financial Analysis
  • Accounting Information Systems
  • Financial Accounting
  • Internal Controls
  • Financial Analysis & Reporting
  • General Ledger
  • Budgeting
  • Corporate Finance
  • Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Auditing
  • Forecasting
  • Internal Audit
  • Cost Accounting
  • Variance Analysis
  • U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Financial Statements
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  • Financial Audits
  • SEC Filings
  • U.S. SEC
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Variance Analysis & Assurance
  • Income Tax
  • Management Accounting
  • Cost Management
  • Financial Modeling
  • Financial Controlling
  • SAP Products

Showcase Your Technical Skills

In order to be successful in this role, it is essential that assistant controllers are proficient in a number of technical systems and procedures. Recruiters are looking for assistant controllers who are skilled in programs like Microsoft Office Suite, ERP systems, and manufacturing software. Additionally, it is important that assistant controllers are familiar with government regulations related to their industry, as they will often be responsible for ensuring that the organization is in compliance with these regulations.
