17 AutoCAD Draftsman Interview Questions and Answers

Learn what skills and qualities interviewers are looking for from an AutoCAD draftsman, what questions you can expect, and how you should go about answering them.

AutoCAD is a computer-aided drafting software program used by architects, engineers, and construction professionals to create precise 2D and 3D drawings. As an AutoCAD draftsman, you use the software to convert the designs of architects and engineers into technical drawings and plans.

While your AutoCAD skills are impressive, you’ll need to answer a few questions during your job interview before you can start work. The questions will focus on your technical skills, as well as your ability to work as part of a team. You may also be asked about your experience using AutoCAD, as well as other computer-aided drafting software programs.

To help you prepare for your interview, we’ve compiled a list of sample AutoCAD interview questions and answers.

Are you familiar with the AutoCAD software?

The interviewer may ask this question to determine your level of experience with the AutoCAD software. If you have previous experience using AutoCAD, explain what you know about it and how it can help you succeed in this role. If you don’t have any prior experience with AutoCAD, discuss your familiarity with other CAD programs and how they relate to AutoCAD.

Example: “I’ve used AutoCAD for several years now, so I’m familiar with its basic functions. However, I also understand that each company has their own unique way of implementing the program. In my last position, I learned more about the specific features of our company’s AutoCAD system and implemented them into my workflow.”

What are your strengths as an AutoCAD draftsman?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your skills and abilities as an AutoCAD draftsman. They want to know what you’re good at so they can decide if you’re the right fit for their company. Before your interview, make a list of your top strengths. Think about which ones would be most helpful in this role. When answering this question, try to focus on specific examples that show how you use these strengths.

Example: “I am highly organized and detail-oriented. I always make sure my drawings are precise and easy to understand. In my last position, I was working with another draftsman who wasn’t quite as detailed oriented as me. I helped her by double checking all of her work and giving her feedback when needed.”

How would you improve the AutoCAD software?

This question is a great way to test your knowledge of the software and how you can improve it. You should answer this question by explaining what you would change about the program, but also why you would make those changes.

Example: “I would add more features to the AutoCAD software that allow users to create 3D models. I think this would be beneficial because many companies are using 3D modeling in their projects now, so having the ability to do this within AutoCAD would save time and money for clients. Another feature I would like to see added is an online library where users could access tutorials and other resources related to the software.”

What is your experience with using AutoCAD?

This question is a great way to gauge your experience with the software and how you use it. You can answer this question by describing what you’ve done in AutoCAD, including any projects you worked on that required using the program.

Example: “I have been working as an AutoCAD draftsman for five years now. I started out my career as an intern at a construction company where I was responsible for creating floor plans of buildings and structures. After completing my internship, I got hired full-time as a draftsman where I continued to work on similar projects. In addition to floor plans, I also created architectural drawings and 3D models.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to use your creativity to solve a problem.

Employers ask this question to see if you have the ability to think outside of the box and come up with unique solutions. Use your answer to highlight your problem-solving skills, creativity and critical thinking abilities.

Example: “At my last job, I was tasked with creating a blueprint for an office building that would be used by multiple departments. The challenge was that each department had different needs when it came to their floor plan. One department wanted more conference rooms while another needed more cubicles. I decided to create a blueprint where each floor could be customized based on the needs of each department. This allowed everyone to get what they needed without having to build multiple floors.”

If a client asked you to make a change to a drawing you’ve already completed, how would you approach the situation?

This question can help interviewers understand how you handle client requests and ensure that the final product meets their needs. Your answer should show your ability to communicate with clients, collaborate with other team members and make changes to a design.

Example: “If a client asked me to change something I’ve already completed, I would first ask them what they wanted changed and why. Then, I would determine if it was possible to implement the change without affecting any of the other elements on the drawing. If so, I would do so immediately. If not, I would explain the situation to the client and offer my recommendations for making the change. In either case, I would work with the client to create an alternative solution or decide whether we should proceed as originally planned.”

What would you do if you were working on a project and you realized you made a mistake in the drawing?

This question can help the interviewer determine how you respond to challenges and make corrections. Your answer should show that you are willing to take responsibility for your mistakes, learn from them and fix them as quickly as possible.

Example: “If I made a mistake in my drawing, I would first try to figure out what caused it so I could avoid making the same mistake again. If I was working on a project with other people, I would let them know about the mistake and ask if they noticed anything similar. Then, I would redraw the part of the drawing that contained the mistake and correct any other drawings that may have been affected by it.”

How well can you follow written instructions?

This question can help the interviewer determine how well you can follow written instructions and whether or not you have experience with reading technical documents. Use examples from your past work to show that you are able to read and understand complex instructions.

Example: “In my previous role, I was responsible for creating detailed drawings of a client’s home renovation project. My supervisor would give me verbal instructions on what they wanted in each room, and then I would create the floor plan according to their specifications. After completing the floor plans, I would receive written instructions detailing any changes they wanted made to the design. I am very comfortable working with both verbal and written instructions.”

Do you prefer to work on your own or with a team?

This question can help an interviewer determine how you might fit into their company culture. If your potential employer has a collaborative work environment, they may want to know that you’re willing to work with others and share ideas.

Example: “I prefer working on my own because I’m usually able to get more done when I don’t have to wait for someone else to finish something before I can start it. However, I also enjoy collaborating with other draftsmen or engineers if we need to discuss our designs or solve problems together.”

When working with a team, what is your role?

This question can help the interviewer determine how you interact with others and your leadership skills. Your answer should show that you are a team player who is willing to take on different roles when needed.

Example: “I am usually the leader of my teams, but I like to make sure everyone has an opportunity to contribute their ideas. When working in a group setting, I try to be more of a facilitator than a dictator. This way, everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and we can work together to find solutions to problems.”

We want to ensure our AutoCAD draftsmen are up-to-date on the latest industry trends. What are some of the latest changes you’ve noticed in the field of architecture?

This question is an opportunity to show your knowledge of the industry and how you can apply it to your work. You should discuss any changes in technology, software or design that you’ve noticed over the last few years.

Example: “I have noticed a lot more 3D modeling being used in architecture projects. I think this is because clients are starting to expect more realistic renderings from their designs. In my previous role, we started using 3D models for all our residential projects. This allowed us to create more detailed drawings with fewer revisions. It also helped us save time on construction since we could see exactly what the finished product would look like before beginning.”

Describe your process for completing a complex drawing.

This question is an opportunity to show your ability to work independently and efficiently. Your answer should include a step-by-step process for completing a complex drawing, including the tools you use to complete each task.

Example: “I start by creating a new file and setting up my workspace. I then create layers and blocks that I can reuse later in the project. Next, I set up my snap settings so I know how far apart objects will be when they’re placed on the grid. Then, I begin drafting by using lines, polylines and circles to create shapes. After this, I use grips to modify the shape of the object and add text.”

What makes you stand out from other AutoCAD draftsmen?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your skills and experience. They want to know what makes you unique from other candidates. When answering, think of a skill or quality that you have that others may not. Try to choose something that is relevant to the job description.

Example: “I am highly organized and detail-oriented. I can work quickly while still maintaining accuracy. These are two qualities that make me stand out as an AutoCAD draftsman. In my previous role, these were two traits that my manager praised me for. She said that I was one of the most efficient employees in the department.”

Which computer-aided design software are you most comfortable using?

This question is a great way to see if you are familiar with the company’s specific software. If they ask this, it’s likely that they use AutoCAD and want someone who can get up to speed quickly. Your answer should include which version of AutoCAD you’re most comfortable using as well as any other computer-aided design software you have experience with.

Example: “I’m most comfortable using AutoCAD 2017, but I also have some experience with AutoCAD 2016 and 2015. I’ve used both Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks in the past, although I am not as comfortable with those programs.”

What do you think is the most important skill for an AutoCAD draftsman to have?

This question is an opportunity to show the interviewer that you have a strong understanding of what it takes to be successful in this role. Your answer should include a skill that you feel confident using and one that you are eager to learn more about.

Example: “I think the most important skill for an AutoCAD draftsman to have is communication skills. I’ve worked with several draftsmen who were very skilled at creating drawings, but they struggled when explaining their ideas to clients or other team members. Having good communication skills allows me to work well with others and ensures that my projects get completed on time.”

How often do you update your skills through continuing education or training?

Employers want to know that you are committed to your career and willing to invest in yourself. Continuing education or training is a great way to show this commitment, especially if the company offers any programs for employees. If there are no existing programs, consider offering to pay for your own training.

Example: “I am always looking for ways to improve my skills as an AutoCAD draftsman. I have taken several online courses on different aspects of CAD drafting, including 3D modeling and rendering. I also attend monthly meetings with other local draftsmen where we discuss new techniques and share our work.”
