I would also recommend that students get involved in internships and/or part-time jobs in the communications field. This will give you the opportunity to gain experience and build your portfolio.

Damari Burton: The most rewarding aspect of my career is seeing the direct impact of my work on the company’s bottom line. I know that the communications strategies I develop and execute help Nike to achieve its business goals. It’s very gratifying to see the results of my efforts.
The most challenging aspect of my career is managing the ever-changing landscape of communications. With the advent of social media, the way that companies communicate with their stakeholders has changed dramatically. It can be difficult to keep up with the latest trends and technologies and to find the best way to use them to achieve Nike’s communications goals.
ClimbtheLadder: What misconception(s) do people have about a Business Communication degree, and what would you tell them?
Damari Burton: I think the biggest misconception is that people believe that a business communication degree is only for people who want to go into sales or marketing. I would tell them that a business communication degree is actually for anyone who wants to learn how to communicate effectively in a business setting.
The skills that you learn in a business communication degree program are transferrable to any field or industry. Whether you want to be a teacher, a lawyer, a doctor, or anything else, being able to communicate effectively is an important skill to have.
