How to Write a Business Owner Resume

Here’s how to write a business owner resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can use bullet points to tell a story about your work. For example, rather than saying you “managed staff,” you could say you “increased staff from 10 to 15 while reducing turnover rate from 15% to 5% in one year by creating clear job descriptions, providing ongoing training, and offering flexible work schedules.”

The second bullet point paints a much clearer picture of what you did and the results of your work. And it provides a specific number to demonstrate the level of improvement.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are used by many companies to help manage the application process. When you submit your resume online, the ATS will scan it for specific keywords related to the job opening. If your resume doesn’t have enough of the right terms, the ATS might automatically reject your application.

One way to make sure your resume makes it past the ATS is to include relevant keywords throughout all sections of your document. You can find a list of commonly used business owner keywords below:

  • Business Strategy
  • Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Business Planning
  • Negotiation

  • Digital Marketing

Showcase Your Technical Skills

Business owners need to be proficient in a variety of technologies in order to run their businesses successfully. This might include familiarity with business management software, accounting software, and marketing tools. Additionally, business owners need to be comfortable using the internet to research and find new suppliers, and to communicate with customers and employees.
