Computational fluid dynamics, or CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. CFDs are used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, chemical, and electronics.

CFD engineers use their skills to design and optimize products and processes. They also develop and test prototypes, and analyze data to improve the efficiency of their designs.

If you’re a CFD engineer, you may be asked to interview for a job at some point in your career. During the interview, you’ll be asked questions about your experience, skills, and knowledge. You may also be asked questions about fluid mechanics and CFD.

To help you prepare for your interview, we’ve compiled a list of sample CFD interview questions and answers.

Are you familiar with the finite element method?

This question is an opportunity to show your knowledge of CFD and how it works. You can answer this question by briefly explaining what the finite element method is, its purpose and how you use it in your work as a CFD engineer.

Example: “The finite element method is one of the most common methods for solving complex fluid dynamics problems. It’s used to solve partial differential equations that are difficult or impossible to solve with other methods. I’ve been using the finite element method since my first job as a CFD engineer because it’s so effective at modeling real-world conditions and predicting results.”

What are the most important considerations when designing a CFD model?

This question can help the interviewer assess your knowledge of CFD modeling and how you approach a project. Use examples from past projects to highlight your critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Example: “The most important considerations when designing a CFD model are accuracy, computational efficiency and stability. Accuracy is essential because it helps me ensure that my models will accurately predict fluid flow in real-world conditions. I also need to consider computational efficiency so that I can complete the design within budget and on time. Stability is crucial for ensuring that the model doesn’t have any errors or flaws that could compromise its results.”

How would you troubleshoot a CFD model that was giving you unexpected results?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot. Your answer should include a step-by-step process for how you would troubleshoot the model, including what tools you would use and how you would interpret the results.

Example: “I would first check that all of my inputs are correct. If they are, I would then run a sensitivity analysis on each input variable to see which ones have the most impact on the CFD model’s output. From there, I would look at the mesh quality and make sure it’s consistent throughout the entire model. Finally, I would compare the results from the CFD model with those from other models or simulations to ensure accuracy.”

What is your experience with using CFD software?

This question can help the interviewer determine your experience level with using CFD software and how you apply it to your work. Use your answer to highlight your knowledge of different types of software, including which ones you’ve used in previous roles and what you like about them.

Example: “I have extensive experience working with several types of CFD software, including ANSYS Workbench, COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB Flow Simulation. I find that each type has its own unique benefits for modeling various processes, but my favorite is MATLAB because of its ability to model fluid dynamics at a high level of detail. It also allows me to use built-in functions to create models without having to write code.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to communicate your findings to a non-technical audience.

The interviewer may ask this question to assess your communication skills and how you can effectively relay technical information to non-technical audiences. Use examples from past experiences where you had to explain complex concepts or ideas in a way that was easy for others to understand.

Example: “In my last role, I worked with a team of engineers who were tasked with creating a new design for an engine. We presented our findings to the company’s board of directors once we completed our research and testing. If hired, what would be your ideal role within our company?

What would you do if you noticed a potential design flaw after completing a CFD model?

This question can help the interviewer determine how you handle mistakes and whether you have a process for addressing them. Your answer should include steps you would take to correct the flaw, including any additional research or testing you might do before implementing your solution.

Example: “If I noticed a potential design flaw after completing a CFD model, I would first try to identify what caused it. If I could find the cause of the problem, I would implement a solution that addressed the issue. If I couldn’t find the cause of the problem, I would run another CFD simulation with different parameters to see if I could replicate the error. If I still couldn’t find the cause of the problem, I would consult my supervisor about the situation.”

How well do you understand fluid dynamics?

This question is an opportunity to show your interviewer that you have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of CFD. You can answer this question by describing how fluid dynamics has helped you in your previous roles and what you’ve learned about it throughout your career.

Example: “Fluid dynamics is one of the most important aspects of CFD engineering because it’s the study of fluids in motion, which is exactly what we do when we’re modeling for clients. In my last role as a CFD engineer, I was tasked with creating models for several different industries, including aerospace, automotive and energy. Understanding fluid dynamics allowed me to create more accurate models for each client.”

Do you have experience working with other engineers to share data and collaborate on projects?

The interviewer may ask you this question to understand how well you work with others and your ability to collaborate. Use examples from your experience to highlight your teamwork skills, communication abilities and problem-solving skills.

Example: “In my previous role as a CFD engineer, I worked on several projects at once with other engineers. We would meet regularly to discuss our progress and share data we collected. This helped us all stay up-to-date on the project’s status and ensured that everyone was working toward the same goal. When collaborating with other engineers, I always make sure to communicate clearly and provide feedback in a timely manner.”

When was the last time you updated your knowledge of computational fluid dynamics techniques?

This question can help the interviewer determine how much you value continuing your education and training. It also helps them understand if you are familiar with the latest CFD techniques. You can answer this question by mentioning a specific course or certification that you have completed in the past few years.

Example: “I recently completed an online course on computational fluid dynamics modeling for engineers. I found it to be very helpful, as it gave me new ideas about how to approach different types of projects. I think it’s important to continue learning about new technologies and methods so that I can provide my clients with the best possible solutions.”

We want to improve the efficiency of our manufacturing processes. Would you be willing to test out new methods and report back on their viability?

This question is a great way to test your problem-solving skills and willingness to take on new challenges. Your answer should show the interviewer that you are willing to try out new methods, even if they’re not proven yet.

Example: “I would be happy to help with this process. I have experience working in manufacturing environments before, so I know how important it is to find ways to improve efficiency. We tested out several different methods for reducing waste and found that implementing lean principles was the best method for our company.”

Describe your process for running a CFD simulation.

This question is a great way to test your knowledge of the process and how you apply it. It also allows you to show that you can work independently, which is an important skill for this role.

Example: “I start by gathering all of the necessary information about the project I’m working on. This includes the client’s specifications, any existing data or research they have and the goals of the simulation. Next, I create a mesh using pre-existing software or my own custom tools. Then, I run the simulation and analyze the results. Finally, I present my findings to the client.”

What makes CFD different from other types of engineering simulations?

This question is an opportunity to show your interviewer that you have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of CFD and how it differs from other types of engineering simulations. You can answer this question by explaining what makes CFD unique, including its applications and limitations.

Example: “CFD stands for computational fluid dynamics, which means it’s a type of simulation used to predict the behavior of fluids in different environments. It uses mathematical models to simulate the flow of liquids or gases through channels, such as pipes or ducts. Unlike FEA, which stands for finite element analysis, CFD doesn’t use physical elements but rather numerical values to calculate the movement of fluids. This allows me to make more accurate predictions about fluid movement than I would be able to with FEA.”

Which industries do you most want to apply CFD to?

This question is a way for the interviewer to understand your interests and goals as an engineer. It also helps them determine if you have experience applying CFD to industries they work with. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention specific projects that were interesting or challenging.

Example: “I am most interested in applying CFD to aerospace engineering because I find the idea of designing something that flies so fascinating. In my last role, I worked on several projects involving aircraft design. One project was working with a company who wanted to redesign their current model of airplane to make it more fuel-efficient. Another project involved creating a new type of plane that could fly faster than any other.”

What do you think is the future of computational fluid dynamics?

This question can help the interviewer get an idea of your thoughts on how CFD will evolve in the future. Your answer should include a few examples of how you would use computational fluid dynamics to solve problems and create solutions for clients.

Example: “I think that as computers continue to advance, we’ll be able to simulate more complex systems with greater accuracy. This means that we’ll be able to test out different scenarios and see what happens before implementing them into real-world situations. I also believe that there will be more collaboration between engineers and scientists, which will lead to better simulations and more accurate results.”

How often should a CFD engineer update their models?

This question can help the interviewer determine how often you update your models and whether you have experience with updating them in a timely manner. Use examples from your past work to show that you know when it’s necessary to update your models and when it isn’t.

Example: “I usually update my models every six months, but I also look at the results of each model after running it to see if there are any changes or updates needed. If I notice something is different than what I expected, then I’ll run the model again to see if the new data shows an improvement. If so, then I’ll make the change to the model.”

There is a bug in your CFD model. What is your process for identifying and fixing the problem?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving skills and ability to work independently. Your answer should include a step-by-step process for identifying the bug, isolating it and fixing it.

Example: “I would first check my calculations and ensure that I didn’t make any mistakes in my math. If everything checks out, then I would look at the model itself to see if there are any issues with the mesh or boundary conditions. If those don’t seem to be the issue, then I would run a diagnostic test on the CFD software to see if there are any errors. If none of these steps solve the problem, then I would contact my supervisor for further instructions.”
