Chelsea Wallace: I recommend that students get involved in extracurricular activities, such as clubs and organizations related to their field of study. For civil engineering students, I would recommend joining the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter. Getting involved in extracurricular activities will not only make you stand out to employers, but it will also allow you to network with professionals in your field and gain experience.
ClimbtheLadder: What type of person is successful and thrives in a Civil Engineering Technology career?
Chelsea Wallace: A successful civil engineering technologist is someone who is able to think both critically and creatively. You need to be able to look at a problem and see it from multiple angles in order to find the best solution. You also need to be able to communicate effectively with a variety of people, as you will be working with a team of engineers, architects, construction workers, and more.
You need to be able to handle stress well, as there will be times when deadlines are tight and you will be working long hours. However, it is also important to know when to take a break, as burnout is common in this field.
ClimbtheLadder: What was the most challenging course you took? What advice would you give to students who are about to start this course?
Chelsea Wallace: The most challenging course I took was Construction Materials and Testing. This course is challenging because it requires a lot of memorization and understanding of the material. My advice to students who are about to start this course is to study and memorize the material. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions in class.
