How to Write a Computer Programmer Resume

Here’s how to write a computer programmer resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can make your bullet points much more interesting and compelling by using specific numbers and metrics.

For example, rather than saying you “developed new software,” you could say you “developed new software that reduced customer wait time by 50% and increased sales by 15%.”

The second bullet point is much more specific and provides a clear picture of what you did and the results of your work.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

Most computer programmer job postings are submitted through an applicant tracking system (ATS). This system will scan your resume for certain keywords related to the job opening. If your resume doesn’t have enough of the right keywords, your application might not make it past the initial screening process.

One way to make sure your resume includes the right keywords is to read through a few job postings and take note of the terms that are used over and over again. Then, try to include some of those same terms on your resume. Here are some common keywords for computer programmer roles:

  • C#

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As a computer programmer, you need to be proficient in a variety of programming languages and tools in order to do your job effectively. Some of the most popular programming languages that employers are looking for include Java, Python, and C++. In addition, you should be familiar with various software development tools, such as Eclipse, Git, and Jenkins.

If you have experience with any of these programming languages or tools, be sure to list them on your resume. Additionally, you should indicate your level of expertise for each one. For example, if you are a proficient Java programmer, you should list that you have expert-level knowledge of the Java programming language.
