Jack Johns: I took a mix of classes that covered both the technical aspects of construction engineering as well as the business side of things. I also did an internship during my junior year, which gave me a chance to put what I was learning in the classroom to use in the real world.
I would advise students to do the same – take a mix of classes and try to get some real-world experience through internships or co-ops. That way, you’ll be prepared for a job in the construction industry whether it’s on the technical side or the business side.

Jack Johns: A person who is successful in a construction engineering career is someone who is able to work well under pressure and manage a variety of tasks simultaneously. They must also be able to communicate effectively with other members of the construction team, as well as with clients.
ClimbtheLadder: Was there anything about your Construction Engineering program that you didn’t expect or anticipate?
Jack Johns: I actually didn’t know what to expect when I started my program. I just knew that I liked building things and I wanted to learn how to do it better. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the program and how much I learned.
