Learn what skills and qualities interviewers are looking for from a controller, what questions you can expect, and how you should go about answering them.

As a controller, you are responsible for the financial stability of your company. This includes preparing financial statements, overseeing accounting operations, and managing budgets. In order to be successful in this role, you need excellent math skills, knowledge of financial accounting, and experience with financial software.

In order to gauge if you are the right fit for the job, interviewers will ask you a range of controller interview questions. The questions will be geared towards your experience and knowledge, as well as your ability to think critically and solve problems.

What experience do you have in the financial industry?

This question can help the interviewer learn more about your background and how it relates to this role. Use your answer to highlight any relevant experience you have, including what kind of work you did and for how long.

Example: “I’ve been working in accounting for over 10 years now. I started out as an accountant at a small firm where I worked with clients on their taxes and helped them understand their financial statements. After five years there, I moved up to a larger company where I was responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting, including payroll, budgeting and tax preparation. In my current position, I’m also responsible for managing our finances.”

What experience do you have in working with other managers to develop long-term financial plans and budgets?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your ability to collaborate with others and develop strategies that benefit the company as a whole. Use examples from past experiences where you worked with other managers or executives to create financial plans, budgets or forecasts for future projects or goals.

Example: “In my last role, I was responsible for creating monthly reports on our current financial status and quarterly projections of how we would meet our annual revenue goals. I met with the CEO once a month to discuss these reports and make any necessary adjustments to our long-term strategy. This helped us stay on track with our budgeting and ensured we were meeting our revenue targets each quarter.”

What are your thoughts on cloud-based financial software solutions?

Cloud-based financial software solutions are becoming more popular in the accounting industry. Employers may ask this question to see if you have experience using cloud-based systems and how they can benefit your work as a controller. In your answer, explain why you prefer or don’t prefer cloud-based systems. If you haven’t used one before, discuss what you would expect from a cloud-based system.

Example: “I think that cloud-based financial software solutions are beneficial for many businesses because they allow companies to access their data remotely. This is especially useful for businesses with multiple locations where employees need to be able to view important information while on the go. However, I prefer local software solutions because they’re often easier to use than cloud-based ones. For example, when I worked at my previous company, we had both a cloud-based solution and a local one. The local system was much easier to navigate.”

Do you have any questions for us about the job or the company?

This question is your opportunity to show the interviewer that you have done some research about their company. It also gives you a chance to ask any questions you might have about the job or the company’s policies and procedures. Before your interview, make a list of three to five questions you would like to ask the interviewer.

Example: “I was impressed by how much this company has grown in the last few years. I’m curious what your secret is for such success. Also, I noticed that there are many opportunities for professional development here. What kind of training programs does the company offer?”

Tell me about a time when you had to manage a large budget.

This question can help the interviewer understand your experience with managing large budgets and how you handled them. Use examples from previous work to highlight your skills in budgeting, analyzing financial data and making decisions about spending money.

Example: “At my last job, I was responsible for overseeing a $1 billion budget. This included allocating funds for marketing campaigns, employee salaries and other expenses. To manage this large budget, I used several tools to analyze our finances and make sure we were using company resources efficiently. For example, I regularly reviewed our revenue reports to ensure that we were meeting sales goals and staying within budget.”

What experience do you have in preparing financial reports?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your experience with financial reports and how you use them in your work. Use your answer to highlight the specific types of reports you’ve prepared, including any that were complex or involved multiple departments.

Example: “In my last role as a controller, I was responsible for preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports. These included balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. In addition, I also created budget projections and forecasts for the next year based on these reports. Preparing these reports required me to analyze data from previous periods and compare it to current performance metrics. This helped me identify areas where we could improve our operations.”

Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer or client.

This question can help interviewers understand how you handle conflict and pressure. Use examples from your previous experience to show that you have the ability to remain calm under stress, communicate effectively and solve problems.

Example: “In my last role as a controller, I had a client who was very demanding. They would call me several times per day with questions about their financial reports, which made it difficult for me to complete other work on time. Eventually, I scheduled a meeting with them to discuss the situation. I explained that while I wanted to be responsive to their needs, I also needed to focus on other tasks. We came up with a solution where they agreed to only contact me once per week regarding their finances.”

What experience do you have in developing and implementing financial policies and procedures?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your experience with developing and implementing financial policies and procedures. Use examples from your past work experience to explain how you developed and implemented policies and procedures that helped the company achieve its goals.

Example: “In my last role, I was responsible for creating and maintaining all of the company’s accounting policies and procedures. This included creating a budgeting process, monitoring cash flow and overseeing the implementation of new software systems. These policies and procedures helped me ensure the company maintained accurate records and met its financial obligations on time.”

What do you think are the most important qualities for a successful controller?

This question can help the interviewer determine if you have the qualities they’re looking for in a controller. Use your answer to highlight your leadership skills, attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.

Example: “I think one of the most important qualities for a successful controller is their attention to detail. Controllers are responsible for ensuring that all financial records are accurate, so it’s vital that we keep track of every transaction. Another quality I think is essential is communication. As a controller, I need to be able to communicate with other members of the accounting team as well as senior management about any issues or concerns I may have regarding the company’s finances.”

What motivates you to do your best work?

This question can help the interviewer get to know you as a person and how your personality might fit in with their company culture. Your answer should show that you are motivated by more than just money, but also by personal growth and development.

Example: “I am motivated by my desire to be the best at what I do. I want to make sure that every task I complete is done well and on time. I’m also motivated by the opportunity to learn new things and develop my skills. In this role, I would have access to many different types of information about the business’s finances, which could help me grow as an accountant.”

Is there anything else we should know about you that would make you a good fit for this job?

This question is your opportunity to show the interviewer that you are a well-rounded person and have more to offer than just accounting skills. You can use this time to talk about any unique experiences or hobbies, volunteer work or other relevant information that would make you an interesting candidate for the job.

Example: “I am also a certified public accountant, so I understand how important it is to be accurate with my numbers. In fact, I enjoy math so much that I taught myself calculus in high school and took college-level courses while still in high school. I was one of only two students who passed the course.”

What do you think makes our company unique?

This question is a great way to show your knowledge of the company and how you can contribute to its success. When answering this question, it’s important to highlight what makes the company unique from other businesses in the industry. You should also mention why these qualities make the company successful.

Example: “I think one thing that makes your company unique is its commitment to customer service. I’ve read about some of the ways you’ve helped customers with their issues, which shows me that you value the needs of your clients. This is something I feel strongly about as well, so I would love to be part of a team that values quality customer service.”

In your opinion, what is the most important thing for a controller to keep in mind when performing their duties?

This question is a great way to determine how the candidate prioritizes their work. It also helps you understand what they value in their job and how they approach it. When answering this question, be sure to discuss something that is relevant to your company’s controller position.

Example: “The most important thing for me as a controller is accuracy. I believe that if my numbers are correct, then everything else will fall into place. For example, when I was working at ABC Company, we had an issue with our inventory system. The software wasn’t accurately recording all of the items we were selling, so we didn’t know how much money we should have on hand. After some investigation, I realized that we were missing $10,000 worth of inventory. We fixed the problem by ordering more inventory from our supplier.”

What would you say is your personal strengths and weaknesses when it comes to financial management?

This question is a great way for the interviewer to get to know you as a person and how your personality might fit in with their company culture. It’s important to be honest, but also highlight any skills or abilities that are relevant to the job description.

Example: “I would say my greatest strength when it comes to financial management is my attention to detail. I am very thorough when performing audits and analyzing reports, which helps me ensure all transactions are accurate. My biggest weakness is that sometimes I can be too cautious about making decisions. I want to make sure I have all of the information before moving forward, so sometimes this means I take longer than others to make a decision.”
