Mariana Crawford: I would recommend that students get experience in as many different areas of digital forensics as possible. There are many different sub-disciplines within digital forensics, and the more experience you have, the more marketable you will be to potential employers.

In addition, I would recommend that students get involved in extracurricular activities, such as student organizations or volunteering. These activities can help you develop important professional skills, such as teamwork and communication, that will be beneficial in your career.

ClimbtheLadder: What type of person is successful and thrives in a Digital Forensics career?

Mariana Crawford: I would say that a person who is successful in digital forensics is someone who is detail oriented and able to think outside the box. You need to be able to pay attention to small details, as they can often be important in an investigation. Additionally, you need to be able to look at a problem from multiple angles and be creative in your thinking in order to find a solution.

ClimbtheLadder: Was there anything about your Digital Forensics program that you didn’t expect or anticipate?

Mariana Crawford: I didn’t expect the program to be so math heavy. A lot of the courses focused on computer science and mathematics, which I didn’t expect. I also didn’t anticipate how much work would be involved. I was taking classes full time, working part time, and interning, so it was a lot of work.
