Carl Jacobson: I made the most of my degree by doing as many internships as possible. I did three internships while I was in school, and those experiences were invaluable. I was able to learn so much about the industry and figure out what I liked and didn’t like. I also made a lot of connections through my internships, which helped me get my job at Google.
I would advise students to do as many internships as possible and to network as much as possible. The more you can learn about the industry and the more connections you make, the better prepared you’ll be for a post-graduation job.
ClimbtheLadder: What type of person is successful and thrives in a Digital Marketing career?
Carl Jacobson: A successful digital marketer is someone who is creative, analytical, and has a growth mindset. You need to be creative to come up with new ideas and campaigns that will capture people’s attention. You need to be analytical to measure the performance of your campaigns and optimize them for better results. And finally, you need to have a growth mindset to always be learning and growing in your career.
ClimbtheLadder: Was there anything about your Digital Marketing program that you didn’t expect or anticipate?
Carl Jacobson: I actually didn’t know much about digital marketing before I started my program. I expected to learn about things like SEO and Google Ads, but I didn’t expect to learn about things like web design, user experience, and content strategy.
I think the most important thing I learned was how to think about marketing from a holistic perspective. It’s not just about getting people to click on an ad or buy a product. It’s about understanding what people want and need, and then creating a user experience that meets those needs.
