Make It Airtight

Electrical engineers require, among other things, great logical-thinking skills and writing ability. Demonstrate these traits through your resume by keeping it clear, organized and error-free. A prospective employer will not look favorably on a sloppy lay-out or glaring typo. Be vigilant while editing your resume and make sure that everything is in its proper place. A careless error on a document so crucial to your career could very well be seen as an indication of future carelessness on the job—it would be a shame for all of your work experience to go unnoticed because of an error in your opening sentence.

Make Your Intentions Clear

There is a huge assortment of electrical engineering jobs out there—target your resume to a specific industry, or a specific job, in order to get the best results. Include an “Objective” statement at the top of your resume, clearly stating what you hope to accomplish. Feel free to mention the position title or company name to which you are applying. You may even include a couple of your main skills, in order to highlight your eligibility from the start.

Exhibit Your Engineering Skills And Experience

One of the more effective ways to describe your engineering skills and experience is a two-tiered approach. Begin by listing your main skills in an “Areas of Expertise” section. Use bullet points and keep this section brief. You only want to sketch a quick profile of your eligibility for this one particular job. Mention only areas that are relevant to a given position. Scan the job posting for skill keywords and include those in your resume.

Electrical engineers use a variety of tools and software. Once you have your main areas of expertise listed, you may expand on them in a “Professional Experience” section. In this section, list your work experience—beginning with the most recent—and then provide context for your areas of expertise by describing them in greater detail in contributing bullets below. Efficiency is key—you want to provide sufficient information while still keeping this brief. List only main contributions. Engineering is a field of precise numerical values, so don’t be shy to include percentages and other quantities in describing your accomplishments. Highlight Your Education

Most electrical engineering jobs will require that candidates have at least obtained a bachelor’s degree. Be sure to include this in your resume, including the institution name and year of completion. If your program allowed specialization—in something like circuitry, microprocessors, communications electronics—include it. If you are in the process of completing a degree, include the forecasted year of completion.

Electrical engineers are the hands and minds that create the myriad electrical systems we take for granted in everyday life. They use electricity to power devices from computers to jet airplanes. Electrical engineers may enter at the design stage, developing ways to use electrical power to create products. They use advanced software, as well as hand tools to build and adjust circuitry and other electronic components. They perform minute calculations and tests to establish safe and functional electrical systems, compiling reports of their findings and drafting technical drawings to facilitate future production. Some may direct the manufacture of products, or investigate malfunctions, hear client complaints, and resolve issues.

Electrical Engineer Earnings And Outlook

This stasis is due to a decline in manufacturing sectors coupled with a rising demand for engineers in research and development of new sustainable energy, communications, transportation and other technologies.

Electrical Engineer Training And Qualifications

Prospective electrical engineers require a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology, as well as a strong background in physics and math. Students should ensure that their post-secondary program has been accredited by ABET—a non-profit NGO, which voluntarily accredits institutional electrical engineering programs, providing quality assurance. Graduates may wish to pursue a master’s degree (sometimes available in combination with a bachelor’s over a 5-year program), which would allow for further advancement towards research and development or teaching the field.
