Learn what skills and qualities interviewers are looking for from an electrical mechanic, what questions you can expect, and how you should go about answering them.

An electrical mechanic installs, repairs, and maintains all types of electrical equipment and systems. This can include everything from simple household wiring to complex industrial machinery. If you’re hoping to become an electrical mechanic, you’ll need to have strong problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings.

Before you can start your new career, you’ll need to go through a job interview. During the interview, you’ll be asked questions about your experience, your skills, and your knowledge of electrical systems. You may also be asked to take a practical test to show your proficiency in electrical work.

To help you prepare for your interview, we’ve compiled a list of sample questions and answers that you can use to practice your responses.

Are you familiar with the National Electrical Code?

The National Electrical Code is a set of standards that electrical professionals must follow when installing and maintaining electrical systems. Employers ask this question to make sure you are familiar with the code and can apply it in your work. Before your interview, review the most recent version of the NEC. In your answer, explain how you use the code in your daily job responsibilities.

Example: “I am very familiar with the National Electrical Code. I have been working as an electrical mechanic for five years now, and I’ve always made sure to stay up-to-date on the latest changes to the NEC. The reason I find it so important to know the NEC is because it helps me do my job safely. For example, if there’s ever a question about whether or not something is allowed by the NEC, I can look it up right away.”

What are some of the most common electrical problems you have encountered in the field?

This question can help the interviewer gain insight into your experience and expertise. Use examples from your previous job to highlight your problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and attention to detail.

Example: “One of the most common electrical problems I’ve encountered is loose connections. This happens when a wire or terminal isn’t properly connected to its respective component. Loose connections are dangerous because they can lead to short circuits that cause fires. Another issue I commonly see is improper grounding. When this occurs, it can lead to an electric shock or electrocution for anyone who comes in contact with the equipment. It’s important to ensure all components have proper grounding so no one gets hurt.”

How would you troubleshoot a problem with a motor that is not working properly?

This question can help the interviewer assess your troubleshooting skills and how you apply them to a variety of problems. Use examples from previous experience in which you used your critical thinking skills to identify the problem, analyze it and implement solutions that solved the issue.

Example: “When diagnosing motor issues, I first inspect the wiring for any signs of damage or loose connections. If there are no visible signs of damage, I test the voltage at the motor’s terminals to ensure it is getting enough power. If the motor still does not work properly, I check the circuit breaker to make sure it is on and then replace the fuse if necessary. Finally, I check the motor’s speed controller to see if it is set correctly.”

What is your process for identifying the cause of an electrical issue?

This question can help the interviewer understand how you approach a problem and solve it. Use your answer to highlight your critical thinking skills, ability to troubleshoot and overall attention to detail.

Example: “I first start by identifying what isn’t working properly. I then check for any loose connections or damaged wires. If there are no visible issues, I will test the circuit with an ohmmeter to see if there is a short-circuit. If there’s still no issue, I’ll use a voltmeter to measure voltage levels in different areas of the circuit. This helps me determine whether the issue is due to low voltage or high voltage.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to give a client bad news about the state of their electrical system.

Interviewers may ask this question to see how you handle difficult conversations. They want to know that you can be honest with clients and keep their best interests in mind. In your answer, try to show the interviewer that you are empathetic and willing to help your client find a solution.

Example: “When I was working for my previous employer, we had a client who called us because they were having issues with their electrical system. When I arrived at the job site, I inspected the electrical system and found that it was damaged beyond repair. The client was understandably upset by this news, but I explained that we would replace the entire electrical system free of charge. We installed a new electrical system within two weeks.”

If you had to recommend an electrical system upgrade to a client, what would you consider?

This question can help interviewers understand your decision-making process and how you prioritize projects. Use examples from past experience to explain the factors that influenced your recommendations.

Example: “When recommending an upgrade, I would consider the client’s budget and timeline for the project. If they have a tight budget but need the system upgraded quickly, I might recommend purchasing used equipment or renting temporary equipment until they can purchase new equipment. In this case, I would also make sure the temporary equipment is compatible with their current electrical setup so it doesn’t cause any issues while it’s in use.”

What would you do if you noticed a coworker performing a dangerous task without the proper safety equipment?

Employers ask this question to make sure you understand the importance of safety in the workplace. They want to know that you will speak up if you see a coworker doing something unsafe and that you can help them learn how to do their job safely. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to ensure your coworker’s safety while also helping them improve their work habits.

Example: “If I saw a coworker performing a dangerous task without proper safety equipment, I would first approach them privately to let them know about the issue. If they were aware of it but simply forgot to wear the right gear, I would offer to help them put on the necessary equipment or show them how to perform the task safely. If they didn’t realize there was an issue, I would give them a chance to correct the problem before reporting it to management.”

How well do you work with others, both in your team and outside of it?

An electrical mechanic may work with a variety of people, including other mechanics and engineers. Employers ask this question to make sure you can collaborate well with others. When answering, think about the types of people you’ve worked with in the past. Try to mention someone who is different from you but whom you got along with well.

Example: “I have always gotten along quite well with my coworkers. I find that when we all get along, it makes our jobs more enjoyable. In my last position, I had an engineer working on my team. He was very detail-oriented, while I am more of a big-picture thinker. We often discussed ideas and solutions together, which helped us come up with creative solutions.”

Do you have experience using electrical schematics?

Electrical schematics are diagrams that show the layout of electrical systems. Employers ask this question to see if you have experience using these tools and how well you can use them.
