What are the most common conditions you treat as an emergency medicine nurse practitioner?

Example: “The most common condition I treat is chest pain. What is the most challenging situation you have faced as an emergency medicine nurse practitioner and how did you handle it?

If you don’t have direct experience, you can discuss any training or certifications you may have that allow you to perform these procedures.

In my last role as an ER nurse practitioner, I assisted with a patient who was experiencing chest pains. After assessing the patient, we determined they were having a heart attack. When performing a physical exam on a patient, what areas do you focus on first?

We want to improve our infection control procedures. What strategies would you recommend?

Infection control is a major concern in the emergency department. The interviewer may ask you this question to assess your knowledge of infection control procedures and how you would implement them into their facility. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to ensure that patients are safe from infections and how you would encourage staff members to follow these procedures.

Example: “I think it’s important for all staff members to practice universal precautions at all times. This means washing hands before entering the patient room, wearing gloves when touching blood or bodily fluids and using disinfectants on surfaces after each visit with a patient. The interviewer may ask you this question to understand how you organize your thoughts and actions during a patient visit. This can help them determine if your organizational skills are sufficient for the role. In your answer, describe your process for documenting information in an organized way that helps you remember details later.

What do you think is the most important trait for an emergency medicine nurse practitioner to have?
