How to Write an Energy Specialist Resume

Here’s how to write an resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

When you’re writing bullet points, it can be tempting to focus on the tasks and responsibilities of your job. But that’s not enough to make a strong impression. Instead, you should focus on the results of your work.

For example, rather than saying you “managed energy usage in office buildings,” you could say that you “reduced energy usage in office buildings by 20% in six months, resulting in $50K in annual savings for company.”

The second bullet point is much stronger because it focuses on the results of the work. And it also provides specific numbers to demonstrate the impact of your work.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you submit your resume for an energy specialist role, it’s likely that your resume will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. ATS programs scan resumes for specific job-related terms, like “energy conservation” or “renewable energy” to determine whether your skills and experience are a match for the position you’ve applied to. If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right keywords, the ATS might automatically reject your application.

To increase your chances of getting an interview, use this list of energy specialist keywords as a starting point to help you identify the skills and experience that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for:

  • Energy
  • Energy Management
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Energy Industry
  • Energy Analysis
  • Energy Auditing
  • Energy Consulting
  • Energy Sector
  • Renewable Energy
  • Power Generation
  • Sustainability
  • Petroleum
  • Energy Procurement
  • Gas
  • Project Management
  • Coal
  • Power Plants
  • Electricity
  • Commissioning
  • Gas Exploration
  • Electricity Transmission
  • Electricity Markets
  • Renewable Energy Projects
  • Demand Response
  • Solar PV
  • Solar Energy
  • Wind Power
  • Energy Efficiency Audits
  • Energy Risk
  • Power Industry

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As an energy specialist, you need to be proficient in a variety of software programs and systems in order to do your job effectively. This might include familiarity with energy management software, energy modeling software, and energy auditing software. Additionally, energy specialists need to be able to use technology to communicate with other members of the team, including engineers and architects.

Some of the programs and systems that energy specialists are typically expected to be proficient in include: EnergyPlus, HERS, and LEED. Energy specialists also need to be familiar with building systems and how they work.
