If you’re passionate about building and designing, you’re a great fit for an engineering career. Engineers are in high demand, so you’ll find opportunities in many different industries, from aerospace to software.

It’s important to craft a cover letter that reflects your engineering skills. You’ll find examples and tips below to help you write a cover letter that will get you noticed.

Engineer Cover Letter Example 1

My name is Jeff Martin and I am an energetic, analytical, and creative thinking person, and am looking for employment that both challenges me as a person and allows me to utilize my skills and experience. I believe that a successful leader needs two things, first to have a passion for what he does and second to have the knowledge and initiative to make sound decisions and take ownership for them. I have both.

While I was working for SIFCO Dallas as their product engineer, I developed and controlled new product lines while maintaining and improving existing ones. I worked directly with the customer to achieve high customer satisfaction and was largely responsible for making SIFCO the “go to guys” for my customers. The product lines that I worked on included everything from the development of concept through qualification and acceptance of the final product by the customer in a highly regulated industry. I was the company representative during customer quality audits and participated in internal auditing procedures. Additionally, I spearheaded projects aimed at resolving quality issues and was instrumental in the solutions developed. I worked with the other engineers on continuous improvement and development projects including rework reduction efforts. Prior to my experience with SIFCO, I participated in and was responsible for internal improvement efforts and creating work instructions. I believe that doing a job right the first time is only half the battle, doing a job right the first time while improving the company’s bottom line and reputation is what truly is important.

Due to the current economic circumstances, SIFCO was forced to lay me off. While I am still working on my degree and have a little farther to go, I feel that the experience that I do have will allow me to meet expectations and that I will be easily able to integrate and contribute to your company. I enjoy working on new projects and coordinating multiple things at a time. I am a hard working individual who takes pride in his work for the company and its customers. I want to thank you for taking the time to read my attached resume and recommendation letters. I am prepared and look forward to hearing from you in the next stage of your hiring process.

Engineering Cover Letter Writing Tips

Use the job description to your advantage

Your cover letter should be tailored to the specific job you’re applying for. If you’re writing a cover letter for an engineering position, use the job description as a guide when drafting your letter. Specifically, look at what skills and experience they are looking for and highlight how you have those skills and know that experience.

You should also tailor your cover letter by pointing out any parts of their requirements that particularly interest or excite you. And if there is something in particular about this company that excites or interests you, be sure to mention it in your cover letter! A hiring manager will see this as passion for their company and will take note of it during the interview process.

Showcase your technical skills

Highlight your technical skills in an engineer cover letter by explaining the ways you can improve their operation.

Talk about examples of how you’ve applied technology to solve problems and increase efficiency. Also, speak to your abilities to facilitate positive change at the company. For example, if they could save money or time by upgrading some systems, let them know.

Showcase your creativity

As an engineer, you’re naturally creative. So, to stand out from other applicants, introduce this creativity in your cover letter. You can show off your creativity by writing about how you’ve solved problems in a creative way or even by writing about a personal project that demonstrates how you’ve used your engineering skills to solve a problem creatively.

Proofread your cover letter

Hiring managers assume engineers are detail-oriented and precise in their work. Therefore, they’ll expect an equally exacting approach in your cover letter. Proofreading is the best way to ensure your cover letter doesn’t include any errors that might suggest you can’t handle this position well.

Before submitting your cover letter, edit it carefully for grammar and spelling errors. If possible, have someone else proofread it as well. If you can’t afford to hire a professional proofreader, ask a friend who has excellent writing skills to review it. As always, don’t underestimate the importance of attention to detail!
