In your answer, explain that you are familiar with LEED certification and describe how you would use it to design a building’s interior or exterior.

For example, at my last job, I was tasked with creating a new floor plan for a client’s office space. To ensure the project met all of the requirements for LEED certification, I had to consider many factors, including the amount of natural light in each room and the materials we used to construct the building.”

What are some of the most important considerations when designing a public park?

This question can help the interviewer determine your knowledge of public parks and how you would design one. Use examples from previous projects to highlight your creativity, problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Example: “Public parks are a great way to bring communities together. I always start by researching what types of activities people in that area enjoy doing. For example, when designing a park for an urban neighborhood, I would include basketball courts, playgrounds and picnic areas. Another important consideration is safety. I make sure all equipment is safe for children and ADA compliant. Finally, I like to add unique elements to my designs to give them character.”

How would you incorporate sustainability into a design project?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your knowledge of sustainable design and how you apply it in your work. Use examples from past projects that demonstrate your ability to create designs that are environmentally friendly.

Example: “I always start by researching the client’s goals for sustainability, as well as their budget. I then consider what materials would be best for the project based on cost and environmental impact. For example, I worked with a client who wanted to build an outdoor playground for children but was concerned about the safety of some materials. I researched different types of wood and found one that had low toxicity levels while also being safe for children. This helped the client achieve their goal of creating a safe play area while still incorporating sustainability into the design.”

What is your process for evaluating a site before beginning a design project?

Example: “I first look at aerial photos of the site to get an idea of the landscape and surrounding areas. In order to do so, we needed to create designs that would allow patients to move from one wing to another without having to go outside. We were able to accomplish this by creating interior hallways that connected each wing.”

If you had the opportunity to redesign any space, where would it be and why?

This question is a great way to show your creativity and passion for design. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention a specific space that you would redesign and the reasons why. This will allow the interviewer to see how passionate you are about your work and what kind of changes you would make.

Example: “If I had the opportunity to redesign any space, I would choose my local library. The reason being is because I love libraries and think they’re such an important part of our communities. I would redesign the library by making it more accessible for people with disabilities and creating spaces where people could study or read in peace. I would also add more computers so that people could use them to search for information.”

What would you do if you were given a budget that was not sufficient to create the design you wanted?

This question can help the interviewer understand how you would handle a challenging situation. Use your answer to highlight your problem-solving skills and ability to create an effective design with limited resources.

Example: “If I was given a budget that wasn’t sufficient for my project, I would first try to find ways to reduce costs without sacrificing quality or functionality. If this didn’t work, I would meet with my client to discuss their expectations and see if there were any changes we could make to lower the cost of the project. If all else fails, I would have to explain to my client that I cannot complete the project within the budget they provided.”

How well do you communicate with contractors and other professionals who work on design projects?

An interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your interpersonal skills and how you collaborate with others. Use examples from past projects to explain how you communicate with contractors, architects and other professionals who work on design teams.

Example: “I have a strong background in communicating with all types of professionals. In my last role, I worked closely with construction crews to ensure that the designs we created were feasible for them to build. I also regularly communicated with architects and engineers to make sure our designs met their standards. These relationships helped me create successful designs that everyone involved could agree upon.”

Do you have experience using computer-aided design software?

This question can help the interviewer determine your level of experience with computer-aided design software. If you have previous experience using this type of software, share what types of programs you’ve used and how they helped you complete projects. If you don’t have any experience using CAD software, explain that you are willing to learn new software if hired for the position.

Example: “I have extensive experience using AutoCAD software in my last role as an environmental designer. I found it helpful to use this program because it allowed me to create detailed designs and models of buildings and landscapes. When is it appropriate to use natural materials in a design?

This question can help the interviewer determine your knowledge of environmental design and how you apply it to a project. Use examples from past projects where you used natural materials in your designs, such as wood or stone, to show that you understand when they are appropriate for use.

Example: “Natural materials are best suited for outdoor spaces because they’re more durable than synthetic materials. For example, I recently worked on an outdoor patio space for a restaurant owner who wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere for customers. We decided to use natural materials like wood and stone to create a warm environment that would be inviting to customers. The natural elements also helped us achieve the aesthetic the client was looking for.”

We want to be able to use our outdoor spaces year-round. What design elements would you include to make our outdoor spaces functional during different seasons?

This question can help the interviewer determine your knowledge of seasonal design and how you would apply it to a client’s outdoor spaces. Use examples from previous projects or describe what you would do if you were designing an outdoor space for the first time.

Example: “I would include elements that allow people to use their outdoor spaces during all seasons, such as fire pits, heaters and furniture that is weather-resistant. I would also make sure there are plenty of trees and shrubs to provide shade in the summer and color in the fall.”

Describe your process for collaborating with clients throughout the design process.

The interviewer may ask you this question to gauge your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with clients. Your answer should include a specific example of how you collaborated with a client in the past, such as a time when you helped them understand your design process or helped them make an important decision about their project.

Example: “I find that it’s important to establish trust with my clients early on in the design process so they feel comfortable asking questions and giving feedback throughout the entire process. I typically meet with my clients at least once per week during the initial stages of the design process to discuss progress and get feedback on designs. This helps me ensure that my clients are happy with the direction of the project and gives them confidence in my abilities.”

What makes you stand out from other candidates who may be applying for this position?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and how you can contribute to their company. Before your interview, make a list of the skills that you feel are most important for this role. Choose two or three skills from your list and explain how you have used them in previous roles.

Example: “I am highly organized and detail-oriented, which is why I love working as an environmental designer. In my last position, I was tasked with creating a new floor plan for a client’s home. I started by making a list of all the rooms they wanted to include in the design. Then, I made a list of all the furniture and accessories they wanted to keep in each room. Using these lists, I created a floor plan that included everything on both lists.”

Which design specialty interests you the most and why?

This question helps employers understand your interests and how they align with the company’s goals. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention a specific project you worked on that relates to your answer.

Example: “I have always been interested in sustainable design because I believe we should use our resources wisely. In my last role, I was able to work on several projects related to energy efficiency. One of these projects was designing an office space for a large corporation that wanted to reduce its carbon footprint. We were able to create a plan where the company could save money by using less electricity while also reducing their environmental impact.”

What do you think is the most important skill for an environmental designer to possess?

This question can help the interviewer determine what you value in an environmental designer. Your answer can also tell them about your own skills and how they relate to those of an environmental designer. When answering this question, it can be helpful to think about which skills you use most often when working on projects.

Example: “I believe that communication is the most important skill for an environmental designer to possess. This role requires us to work with many different people from a variety of backgrounds. I find that being able to clearly communicate my ideas and collaborate with others helps me create effective designs that everyone can understand. It also allows me to better understand the needs of my clients and other team members.”

How often do you update your knowledge and skills as an environmental designer?

Employers ask this question to make sure you are committed to your career and want to continue learning. They also want to know if you have any specific goals for the future. In your answer, share a few ways you plan to improve yourself as an environmental designer. You can mention that you would like to take classes or read books on the subject.

Example: “I am always looking for new ways to improve my skills as an environmental designer. I recently took a class at the local college where I learned about some of the newest technology in the field. I also subscribe to several design magazines so I can stay up-to-date with what is happening in the industry. I find it helpful to connect with other designers online too.”

There is a new trend in the marketplace that you don’t think would work well in your designs. How do you handle it?

This question is a great way to see how you handle change and new ideas. It also shows the interviewer that you are willing to be honest about your opinions, even if they differ from others’. When answering this question, it can be helpful to give an example of a trend you have seen in the past and why you think it didn’t work well.

Example: “I would say there is a current trend toward open floor plans where all rooms are connected by large openings. I don’t think this works for every home or business because it takes away privacy and makes it harder to keep noise levels down. In my last position, we had a client who wanted an open floor plan but was concerned about privacy. We suggested using frosted glass doors instead of solid ones so she could still enjoy the openness while having some privacy. She loved the idea and ended up being very happy with her final design.”
