ESL Teacher Cover Letter Writing Tips

Summarize your teaching experience

If you’re a teacher who is looking for a job in another country, keep the cover letter to one page. You have to make sure that it stays concise while still showcasing why you’d be an asset to the company.

To do this, start by summarizing your most recent teaching experience and combine this with how it has prepared you for working in the location. While doing so, also include any unique opportunities or qualifications related to the location that are relevant and impressive (type of degree earned abroad).

Show how you’ll fit into the school’s mission

The best way to demonstrate your suitability for a teaching position is to demonstrate how your skills are relevant to the school’s mission. You can do this by showing that you have firsthand experience, or by referencing research, studies or articles from reputable sources that prove your point.

In addition, if there is a particular aspect of the position you’re applying for that requires additional qualifications or experience (such as training and certifications), be sure to mention it in the cover letter. Doing so will show hiring managers how much initiative you took to make sure they would want to hire you!

Use a personal story to show your dedication

If you’re applying for a teaching position as an ESL teacher, include a story that shows your passion for language and teaching. Explain how you learned another language, or talk about the time you taught English to children in another country.

Proofread your cover letter

ESL teachers must pay close attention to detail and choose their words carefully. As such, they must take the time to proofread their cover letters for grammar and spelling errors. An ESL teacher with poor communication skills will be unable to adequately teach her students new vocabulary or deliver lessons clearly.
