If we asked your previous employers about you, what would they say?

They would also say that I am always willing to help out when needed and that I have great communication skills. What would you do if you saw another employee violating company policies?

Employers ask this question to make sure you know how to report violations and keep the workplace safe. In your answer, explain that you would first try to talk to them about it in private. If they don’t change their behavior, you would then report it to a supervisor or manager.

Example: “I once worked with an employee who was drinking alcohol on the job. I talked to him privately about it, but he didn’t listen. So, I reported it to my supervisor, and they fired him. They also checked all of us for alcohol and drugs after that.”

How well do you speak English?

English is the primary language spoken in most American workplaces. Employers may ask this question to ensure you can communicate effectively with your coworkers and supervisors. If English isn’t your first language, consider including a brief explanation of how you learned it.

Example: “I grew up speaking Spanish at home, but I took several years of high school classes that taught me English grammar and vocabulary. I’ve also worked on farms where everyone spoke English, so I’m comfortable communicating with my coworkers and supervisors. I understand that if I need help understanding something, I should ask for clarification.”

Do you have a driver’s license?

Example: “I have a process for identifying problems and taking action. First, I try to understand the problem by asking questions and listening to others’ perspectives. We want to improve our environmental sustainability efforts. How would you go about doing that?

Describe your experience with livestock.

This question can help the interviewer determine your experience with animals and how you might fit in on a farm. If you have no experience working with livestock, consider describing an instance where you helped care for someone’s pet or describe any other relevant experience that relates to this job.

Example: “I’ve worked with livestock my entire life. My parents own a small farm, so I grew up helping them take care of their cattle and horses. I also volunteered at a local animal shelter when I was younger, which gave me valuable experience caring for different types of animals.”

What makes you stand out from other candidates?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and how you can contribute to their farm. When answering, it’s important to highlight a skill or experience that makes you unique from other candidates. You may also want to mention something that relates to the job description.

Which crops have you worked with in the past?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your experience. They want someone who is familiar with the crops they grow and harvest. Before your interview, research what types of crops the farm grows. In your answer, share which ones you have worked with in the past. Explain how much experience you have working with these crops.

Example: “In my previous role as a farm worker, I helped plant corn, wheat and soybeans. I also harvested potatoes, carrots and beets. I am very comfortable working with all of these crops. What do you think is the most important aspect of customer service?

Employers may ask this question to see how you would interact with their customers. They want to make sure that you can provide excellent customer service and help the farm’s clients feel valued. In your answer, explain what makes good customer service and share a time when you provided great customer service in the past.

Example: “I think the most important aspect of customer service is making sure that the client feels heard and understood. I always try to listen carefully to what they’re saying and respond thoughtfully. If I can understand exactly what they need or want, it helps me deliver better service. For example, at my last job, I had a customer who was looking for a specific type of flower. I asked her questions about what she liked about other flowers she grew and helped her find the perfect flower.”

How often were your wages increased in your previous job?

Employers may ask this question to learn about your salary history. They want to know if you’ve received a raise in the past and how much it was. If you haven’t had a raise, explain why. If you have, share what percentage of increase you got.

Example: “I received a 5% raise every year I worked at my previous job. My starting wage was $10 per hour, and by the time I left, I was making $12 per hour.”

There is a new law that affects how you work. How do you handle it?

Employers may ask this question to make sure you are aware of any new laws that affect farm work. They want to know that you will follow the law and keep their company out of trouble. In your answer, explain how you would research the law and implement it into your daily tasks.
