To help you prepare for your next fashion writer interview, we’ve compiled a list of sample questions and answers.

Are you familiar with the latest trends in the fashion industry?

Employers ask this question to see if you’re up-to-date with the latest fashion trends. They want to know that you can write about current styles and what’s popular in the industry. When answering, make sure to mention a few of the most recent trends or fashions you’ve seen in your research.

Example: “I’m always keeping an eye out for new styles and designs. I love following some of my favorite bloggers who post about the newest clothing lines and accessories. I also like to read magazines and websites to stay informed on the latest trends. For example, I recently saw a photo of someone wearing a pair of jeans rolled up at the ankle. It was really unique, so I would definitely consider writing about it.”

What are some of your favorite fashion brands and why?

This question can help the interviewer get to know you a little better and see what your interests are. It’s important to be honest in this answer, but also try to include brands that may be similar to the one you’re interviewing for.

Example: “I love Forever 21 because they have such cute clothes at affordable prices. I also really like Free People because their pieces are so unique and different from other stores. I think it’s important to support smaller brands as well, so I shop at places like ModCloth and ASOS quite often.”

How would you describe your writing style?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your writing style and how it fits with their publication. Your answer should include a few examples of the types of articles you’ve written in the past, along with what makes them unique.

Example: “I would describe my writing style as informative but fun. I enjoy researching topics and finding new ways to present information that’s both interesting and relatable. In my last position, I wrote several pieces on fashion trends for different age groups. For one article, I interviewed mothers who were also influencers to find out what they liked to wear when they’re running errands or going out with their kids.”

What is your experience with using social media platforms to share your work?

Employers may ask this question to learn more about your experience with social media platforms and how you use them. They want to know if you have any previous experience using the platform they use, such as LinkedIn or Twitter. In your answer, share which social media platforms you’ve used in the past and what your experience was like.

Example: “I have a lot of experience using social media platforms to share my work. I started out writing for a fashion blog where I shared my articles on our website and through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. I also wrote for a magazine that published my work online and shared it on various social media platforms.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to pitch an idea to a editor.

Interviewers may ask this question to see how you interact with your superiors and whether or not you have experience pitching ideas. In your answer, try to show that you can work well with others while also highlighting the skills you bring to the role.

Example: “In my last position as a fashion writer for a local magazine, I pitched an idea to my editor about writing a piece on the latest trends in fall fashion. My editor liked the idea but wanted me to focus more on specific age groups. I was able to write two articles based on her feedback, one focusing on teenagers and another on adults.”

If a trend you were writing about suddenly became popular, how would you handle it?

This question can help interviewers understand how you would react to unexpected situations. They may want to know that you have the ability to adapt and adjust your writing style as needed. In your answer, try to explain what steps you would take to change your content while still maintaining a professional tone.

Example: “If I were writing about a trend that suddenly became popular, I would first make sure to update my original article with any new information. Then, I would write an entirely new piece on the same topic but in more detail. This way, readers could see both the history of the trend and its current state. Finally, I would promote both articles so they reached as many people as possible.”

What would you do if you were assigned to write a piece on a new clothing line but you didn’t like any of the pieces?

This question can help the interviewer determine how you handle challenges in your work. Your answer should show that you are willing to do research and find a way to write about the brand or product even if you don’t like it.

Example: “I would first ask my editor for more time to look at the line, as I may have missed something. If they said no, I would try to find someone who could give me their opinion on the clothing line. Then, I would use my own personal style to create an article that was informative but also gave readers some insight into what pieces they might like from the collection.”

How well do you know the history of fashion?

Fashion writers need to be able to write about the history of fashion, including how it has changed over time. This question helps employers determine whether you have a strong knowledge base in this area and if you can use your writing skills to educate others on the topic. When answering this question, make sure to show that you are passionate about learning more about fashion’s past and its evolution.

Example: “I am fascinated by the history of fashion because I think it is so interesting to see how styles have evolved over time. For my last job, I wrote an article about the history of denim jeans, which was very fun for me. I researched many different eras of fashion and found some really cool facts about when certain trends started.”

Do you have any experience interviewing designers or other professionals in the industry?

Interviewers may ask this question to see if you have experience interviewing professionals in the fashion industry. They want to know that you can conduct an interview and write about it effectively. In your answer, share a specific example of when you interviewed someone for a story or how you prepared for an interview.

Example: “In my last role as a fashion writer, I was responsible for conducting interviews with designers before their runway shows. I would reach out to them at least two weeks before the show to set up a time to speak with them on the phone. Then, I would meet them backstage during the show to get quotes from them about their inspiration and design process. After each show, I would write a piece about the designer’s work and submit it to my editor.”

When is the best time to share fashion advice with readers?

The interviewer may ask you this question to learn more about your writing style and how you plan out content. Your answer should include a few details about when you write, such as deadlines or the time of year.

Example: “I find that the best time to share fashion advice is in the fall and winter months because those are the times people start shopping for new clothes. I also like to write my articles during the holiday season so readers can get ideas for gifts they can buy their loved ones. In addition, I always make sure to publish my articles before major events, such as award shows or red carpet premieres.”

We want to improve our social media presence. How would you use our social media accounts to promote your content?

Social media is an important part of the fashion industry, and employers want to know that you can use their social media accounts effectively. In your answer, explain how you would promote your content on each platform.

Example: “I have a lot of experience using social media to promote my work. I would create a schedule for when I post new articles so they are posted at optimal times. For example, I would post our most recent article on Instagram in the morning because it has the highest engagement rate during that time. Then, I would share it on Facebook later in the day when people are more likely to see it. Finally, I would share it on Twitter in the evening when people are checking their feeds.”

Describe your process when starting a new article.

This question can help the interviewer understand how you approach your work and what steps you take to complete it. Describe a process that works for you, but make sure it’s one that is efficient and effective.

Example: “I start by researching my topic thoroughly so I have all of the information I need to write about it. Then, I outline my article with key points and supporting details. Next, I begin writing the first draft of the article, making sure to include all of the necessary elements like quotes, statistics and anecdotes. After completing the first draft, I review it carefully for any errors or typos before submitting it.”

What makes you qualified to write about fashion?

Employers ask this question to make sure you have the necessary experience and qualifications for the job. Before your interview, read through the job description to see what they’re looking for in a candidate. If you don’t have any prior fashion writing experience, focus on your other skills that can help you succeed in this role.

Example: “I’ve been passionate about fashion since I was a teenager. I started my blog five years ago where I write about the latest trends and styles. I also do research on designers and brands so I know who’s making quality products. I’m always up-to-date with the latest news in the fashion industry, which makes me an ideal candidate for this position.”

Which writing style do you prefer to use when writing about fashion?

This question can help the interviewer understand your writing style and preferences. Your answer should show that you have a strong preference for one type of writing over another, but it’s also important to explain why you prefer this style.

Example: “I find that I am most comfortable using a journalistic style when writing about fashion because I enjoy researching and interviewing people to get quotes and information for my articles. However, I do like to use more creative elements in my work, such as metaphors or similes, which is something I feel makes my writing more interesting.”

What do you think is the most important aspect of a fashion article?

This question is your opportunity to show the interviewer that you understand what it takes to write a quality article. Your answer should include an explanation of why this aspect is important and how you incorporate it into your own writing.

Example: “I think the most important part of any fashion article is the imagery. A well-written piece can be ruined by poor photography or editing, so I always make sure my articles have high-quality images. I also take care to ensure that all of my photos are properly sourced and credited. Another important element of a good article is the ability to engage readers with interesting content. To do this, I try to use engaging language and avoid using jargon.”

How often should fashion writers update their blogs or websites?

This question can help interviewers understand how you prioritize your work and the deadlines you meet. Your answer should show that you are organized, dependable and able to manage multiple projects at once.

Example: “I believe it’s important for fashion writers to update their blogs or websites regularly so readers know when new content is available. I usually aim to publish a new article every week, but if there is an event or trend I want to cover in-depth, I may take longer to research and write about it. In my last role, I published two articles per month on average, which helped me maintain a consistent presence online.”

There is a new trend that you don’t like. How would you address it in your article?

This question is a great way to test your writing skills and how you can use them in the fashion industry. Your answer should show that you are able to write about trends you don’t like, but still make it interesting for readers.

Example: “I would address this trend by explaining why I don’t like it and then give examples of what I do like. For example, if I didn’t like the color pink, I could explain why I think it’s overused and then talk about some other colors that are just as fun and stylish. This will help my readers understand why I don’t like something without making them feel bad about liking it.”
