Fiber Optic Technician Resume Example & Writing Guide

Use this Fiber Optic Technician resume example and guide to improve your career and write a powerful resume that will separate you from the competition.

Fiber optic technicians install and maintain fiber optic cable networks. They work with other technicians, engineers, and architects to design and build these networks, which provide high-speed Internet, video, voice, and other types of telecommunications services.

Because fiber optic technology is relatively new, this field is growing quickly. As more companies look to expand their reach into global markets and develop new ways to serve customers, they’re turning to fiber optics to help them do it faster and more efficiently than ever before.

Because fiber optic technicians work with highly specialized equipment and complex networks, it can be difficult to find a job if you’re new to the field. But if you’re a skilled fiber optic technician looking for a new opportunity, here are some tips and an example resume template to help you write a strong resume that will get you noticed by hiring managers.

How to Write a Fiber Optic Technician Resume

Here’s how to write a fiber optic technician resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

When you’re writing bullet points, it can be tempting to simply list your responsibilities. But that’s not enough to make a strong impression. Instead, you should use your bullet points to demonstrate your value by highlighting your accomplishments, skills, and results.

For example, rather than saying you “installed fiber optic cables,” you could say you “installed more than 1,000 feet of fiber optic cables in new construction project, ensuring on-time completion of project.”

The second bullet point is much stronger because it provides more detail about what exactly you did and how it contributed to the project’s success.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you submit your resume for a job as a fiber optic technician, it’s likely that it will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. These programs look for certain terms related to the job, like “fiber optics” and “cable installation,” in order to determine whether your skills and experience are a match for the position. If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right keywords, the ATS might disqualify you from further consideration.

That’s why it’s important to use this list of common fiber optic technician keywords as a starting point when writing your resume. You can add them into the relevant sections, like work experience and skills,

  • Fiber Optics
  • Telecommunications
  • Networking
  • Troubleshooting
  • Fiber Optic Cabling
  • Data Center
  • LAN Administration
  • FTTx
  • Broadband
  • Wireless Technologies
  • Cisco Systems Products
  • Voice over IP (VoIP)
  • Fiber Optic Interference
  • Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP)
  • Internet Protocol (IP)
  • Telecommunications Hardware
  • Network Administration
  • Network Security
  • Cabling
  • Cable Television
  • Fiber Optic Testing
  • Fiber Optic Communication
  • Data Communications
  • Optical Networking
  • ATM
  • Voice Communications
  • Windows Server
  • Routers
  • CATV
  • Data Transmission

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As a fiber optic technician, you need to be proficient in a variety of software programs and systems in order to do your job effectively. This might include familiarity with fiber optic design software, fiber optic testing software, and fiber optic cable management software. Additionally, fiber optic technicians need to be able to use technology to communicate with other members of the team, including engineers and project managers.

Some of the programs and systems that fiber optic technicians are typically expected to be proficient in include: Fiber Optic Design Suite, Fiber Optic Test Manager, and Fiber Optic Cable Manager.
