How to Write a Gastroenterologist Resume

Here’s how to write a resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can use them to tell a story about your work. For example, rather than saying you “conducted research on inflammatory bowel disease,” you could say you “conducted research on inflammatory bowel disease and identified new genetic markers for the disease, contributing to a greater understanding of its causes and potential treatments.”

The second bullet point is much more interesting and compelling because it provides more detail about what you did and the results of your work.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you apply for a job as a gastroenterologist, your resume is likely to be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. This program looks for certain terms related to the job, like “endoscopy” and “colonoscopy,” to determine whether your experience is a match. If you don’t have the right keywords on your resume, the ATS might not forward your application to the hiring manager.

To make sure your resume makes it past the ATS, use this list of common gastroenterology keywords as a starting point:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Hospitals
  • Medicine
  • Gastrointestinal Diseases
  • Medical Education
  • Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
  • Medical Research
  • Medical Writing
  • Healthcare
  • Clinical Research
  • Dermatology
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Endoscopy
  • Pediatrics
  • Family Medicine
  • Hepatology
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Oncology
  • Laparoscopic Surgery
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Cancer
  • Cancer Surgery
  • Clinical Trials
  • Medical Oncology
  • Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Endoscopy Procedures
  • Internal Medicine Residency

Showcase Your Technical Skills

Gastroenterologists are responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases of the digestive system. In order to do this effectively, they need to be familiar with a variety of software programs and systems used in the medical field.

Some of the programs and systems that gastroenterologists are typically expected to be proficient in include: electronic health records (EHR) software, medical imaging software, gastrointestinal diagnostic software, and prescription processing software.
