Hosts are the face of the entertainment industry. They work in a wide range of settings, from small restaurants to huge stadiums, and are responsible for making sure that their guests have a great time. Before you can start working as a host, you’ll need to go through a job interview.

What made you want to become a host?

Example: “Ever since I was young, I have always been fascinated with hosting events. My parents owned a restaurant when I was growing up, so I would often host family dinners there. As I got older, I started volunteering at local festivals and other community events. Eventually, I decided to go into event planning as a career because it combines my love of food and entertainment.”

Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

This question can help employers learn more about your customer service skills. They want to know that you’re willing to go the extra mile for their customers. When answering this question, think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. Explain what motivated you to do so.

Example: “When I was working at my previous job, we had a regular customer who came in every Friday night with his family. He always ordered the same thing, but one week he didn’t come in. We were worried something happened to him because it was unlike him not to show up. So, I called his house to see if everything was okay. It turned out that he was sick and couldn’t make it into work. I offered to bring food to his house so he could eat.”

Describe a time when you had to resolve an issue quickly and efficiently.

Hosts often have to resolve issues quickly and efficiently. Employers ask this question to see if you can handle stressful situations well. In your answer, explain the situation and how you resolved it. Show that you are a problem solver who is confident in your abilities.

Example: “At my last job, I had to deal with an upset customer at a large event. The guest was having trouble finding their seat, so I went over to help them find it. While we were looking for their seat, they spilled red wine on their white shirt. They became very stressed about ruining their outfit. I helped calm them down by offering to get them another drink or take them to the restroom to change clothes.”

What do you think is the key to providing outstanding customer service?

Interviewers ask this question to see if you have the same standards for customer service as they do. They want to know that you will be able to provide quality service to their customers and keep them happy. When answering, make sure to emphasize your commitment to providing excellent service.

Example: “I think the key to providing outstanding customer service is being genuinely interested in the people I’m serving. If I can listen to what my guests are saying and respond with genuine care, it shows that I really care about their experience. This makes them feel more comfortable and confident in me, which leads to a better overall experience.”

What would you do if a guest was unhappy with their experience?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your customer service skills. They want to know how you would handle a challenging situation and make it right for the guest. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to resolve the issue and ensure that the guest has a positive experience at the end of their visit.

Example: “If I noticed a guest was unhappy with something during their visit, I would first try to find out exactly what they were dissatisfied about. Then, I would apologize for any inconvenience and offer them a discount on their next visit or another item off the menu as an apology. If the problem was more serious, such as food poisoning, I would immediately call my manager so they could help me figure out the best way to resolve the situation.”

Do you have any experience with event planning?

Event planning is a skill that many hosts need to have. Employers ask this question to see if you have any experience with event planning and how much you know about the process. If you do, share your previous experiences with them. If you don’t, let them know what skills you have that can help you succeed in this role.

Example: “I’ve never done event planning before, but I am very organized and detail-oriented. These are two important skills for event planners to have. I also understand the importance of communication when it comes to coordinating large events. I think my organizational and communicative skills would make me a great fit for this position.”

Being that first impressions are very important in this role, how would you greet a guest?

Interviewers ask this question to see how you would make a guest feel welcome and comfortable. They want to know that you can be friendly, helpful and welcoming when interacting with guests. In your answer, try to show the interviewer that you are confident in yourself and have good interpersonal skills.

Example: “I believe that first impressions are very important because they set the tone for the rest of the interaction. When greeting a guest, I would introduce myself and shake their hand. Then, I would give them a tour of the facility or restaurant if it’s their first time visiting. If they’re dining alone, I would offer to sit with them at their table so we could talk more about the menu.”

What do you think separates excellent customer service from good customer service?

Interviewers ask this question to see how you define excellence in customer service. They want to know that you have a clear understanding of what excellent customer service looks like and that you can apply your knowledge to the role. In your answer, explain what makes good customer service good and what separates it from excellent customer service.

Example: “I think there are two main differences between good and excellent customer service. The first is empathy. Excellent customer service representatives understand their customers’ needs and respond with solutions that address those needs. Good customer service representatives may be able to solve problems but don’t always take the time to really listen to their customers. The second difference is communication. Excellent customer service representatives communicate clearly and effectively with both customers and other employees. They make sure everyone understands their requests and responds appropriately.”

Are you comfortable working with a diverse range of people?

As a host, you may be responsible for welcoming and seating guests of all ages, races, genders and religions. Employers ask this question to make sure you are comfortable working with people from different backgrounds. In your answer, share an example of how you have worked with a diverse group of people in the past. Explain that you enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life.

Example: “I am very comfortable working with a diverse range of people. At my last job, I was hired as a server at a restaurant. One night, we had a large party come in. The family was made up of many different age groups, including children. I helped seat them and took their orders. Throughout the meal, I interacted with everyone in the family. They were all very nice, and I enjoyed getting to know them.”

Do you have any questions for us about the host position?

Interviewers often ask this question to see if you have done any research on the company and position. They want to know that you are genuinely interested in the job, so it’s important to come prepared with a few questions about the role or company culture.

Example: “I noticed that your restaurant has an open kitchen concept. I’m curious how you ensure guests feel comfortable when they can see into the kitchen. Do you have any tips for making sure our servers stay calm during busy times? Also, I am very passionate about customer service, so I would love to learn more about your training program.”

Do you have experience working with social media?

Social media is an important part of the hospitality industry, and employers want to know if you have experience using social media platforms. Use your answer to highlight any skills or knowledge you have with social media.

Example: “I’ve been using social media for years now, so I’m very familiar with how it works. I use Facebook, Instagram and Twitter daily to keep up with my friends and family, but I also use them professionally. I have a large following on all three social media platforms, which has helped me gain more exposure as a host. I am always looking for new ways to engage with my followers and fans.”
