15 Hostess Interview Questions and Answers

Hostesses are the first and last impression a customer has of a restaurant. They are the smiling faces that greet guests, take their coats, and seat them in a comfortable booth or chair. They also make sure the guests have everything they need during their meal, including refills of drinks and bread.

If you’re looking for a job as a hostess, you’ll need to be able to answer questions about your customer service skills, as well as your knowledge of the restaurant’s menu and wine list. You’ll also need to be able to juggle multiple tasks at once and provide excellent service to each and every customer.

What made you decide to become a hostess?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your background and motivations. They want to know what inspired you to pursue a career as a hostess, so they can understand how much passion you have for the job. When answering this question, try to think of an event or person that led you to apply for this role.

Example: “Ever since I was young, I’ve loved meeting new people. My parents always took me out to eat at different restaurants, which gave me the opportunity to meet many interesting people. As I got older, I realized I wanted to make a career out of making others feel welcome. Hosting seemed like the perfect way to do that, so I enrolled in a hospitality program.”

What do you think are the most important qualities for a successful hostess?

Employers ask this question to see if you have the same qualities they look for in a hostess. They want someone who is friendly, outgoing and personable. When answering this question, think about what makes you successful as a hostess. Try to focus on your own strengths rather than listing qualities that are important but not unique to you.

Example: “I believe the most important quality for a successful hostess is being genuinely kind and caring. I always try to make sure everyone feels welcome at my restaurant. I also think it’s important to be organized and efficient. I like to keep track of all the reservations so I can seat people according to their party size and preferences. Finally, I think communication skills are essential. I am constantly talking with customers and other staff members, so I need to be able to clearly communicate any questions or concerns.”

Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer.

This question can help employers learn more about your customer service skills. They want to know that you’re willing to go the extra mile for their customers. When answering this question, think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. Explain what motivated you to do so.

Example: “When I was working at my previous job, we had a regular customer who came in every Friday night with his family. He always ordered the same thing, but one week he didn’t come in. We were worried something happened to him, so we called his house. It turned out he was just sick and couldn’t make it into work. We delivered his food to his house so he could enjoy it while recovering.”

Describe a time when you had to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Hosting is a multitasking job, so employers ask this question to make sure you can handle multiple responsibilities at once. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe a time when you had to manage several tasks and how you handled them successfully.

Example: “When I worked as a server, I would often have to take orders, deliver food and drinks, check on customers and answer questions all at the same time. To keep track of everything, I used my memory and notes to remember what each table needed and wrote down any important information that came up during the night. This helped me stay organized and ensure everyone was happy.”

Tell me about how you stay organised while working as a hostess.

They want to know that you can manage multiple tasks at once, prioritize important things and keep track of time. In your answer, explain how you use organizational tools like calendars or task lists to help you get through your day.

Example: “I am a very organized person, so I find it easy to stay on top of my work as a hostess. I always make sure to write down any important dates or times in my planner or calendar. I also use my phone’s reminders feature to remind me about upcoming events or meetings. This helps me prepare for my shift before it even starts.”

Share with me an instance where you utilized great teamwork skills as part of your role as a hostess

Teamwork is an important skill for any hostess to have. Employers ask this question to see if you are able to work well with others and how you handle conflict. In your answer, share a specific example of when you used teamwork skills to help solve a problem or achieve a goal.

Example: “At my previous job as a hostess at a restaurant, I had the opportunity to work alongside some great people. One night, we were extremely busy and short-staffed. The manager asked me to take on another role as a server while they found someone else to fill in as a hostess. I agreed because I knew it was what needed to be done. Tell me about a time when you had to manage a conflict between two guests.

In your answer, share a specific situation that involved two guests who were having a disagreement. Explain what steps you took to resolve the issue.

Example: “At my previous job, I had a couple come in for dinner on Valentine’s Day. The woman was upset because she thought her boyfriend forgot about their anniversary. He assured her he remembered but didn’t want to spend too much money on an expensive meal. She insisted they go somewhere more expensive, so he agreed.

After they ordered, she got up from the table and went into the bathroom. When she came back, she told him she wanted to leave. He tried to convince her to stay, but she refused. They ended up leaving before their food arrived.”

9.What do you think is the most important aspect of customer service?

This question is a great way to determine how you feel about customer service and what your priorities are. Interviewers ask this question to see if you have the same values as their establishment, so it’s important to give an answer that shows you understand what they value.

Example: “I think the most important aspect of customer service is making sure customers leave happy. I know that sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned, but my goal is always to make sure everyone has a good experience. If something goes wrong, I try to fix it or find someone who can help them. I also believe in going above and beyond for customers. For example, if they need directions to somewhere, I’ll write down directions for them even though we aren’t supposed to do that.”

What are your career aspirations?

They want to know that you are motivated and willing to work hard to get where you want to be in the hospitality industry. When answering this question, it can be helpful to talk about a specific goal or two that you have for yourself. You can also mention any steps you’ve taken to reach those goals so far.

Example: “I would love to one day become a general manager of a restaurant. I am currently taking classes at my local community college to earn my bachelor’s degree in hospitality management. This will help me gain the skills and knowledge I need to succeed as a general manager.”

Tell us about how you’ve contributed to making your workplace more enjoyable for everyone.

Employers ask this question to see if you have a positive attitude and are willing to help others. When answering, think of an example from your previous job where you made the workplace more enjoyable for everyone.

Example: “At my last job, I noticed that some coworkers were having trouble getting along with each other. I approached them both separately and asked what they thought was going on. They told me that one coworker had been acting differently toward them recently. I talked to the third coworker about it and found out she was just stressed at work. She apologized to the other two and everything went back to normal.”

If we were to speak to your previous manager, what would they say about your performance as a hostess?

This question is a great way to learn more about your potential new employer. It also allows you to share what you’ve learned from previous managers and how it has helped you grow as an employee. When answering this question, try to focus on the positive aspects of your past work experience.

Example: “My last manager would say that I am very friendly and outgoing. They would also mention that I have excellent customer service skills and always put my guests first. My manager would tell you that I’m someone who can be trusted with confidential information and that I am always willing to help out wherever needed.”

Why are you looking to leave your current role?

Employers ask this question to make sure you’re looking for a new opportunity because you want to grow and develop your career, not because you’re unhappy with your current job. When answering this question, be honest about why you’re looking for a new role but emphasize that you are excited about the position you’re interviewing for.

Example: “I’m looking for a new hostess position because I’ve grown quite comfortable in my current role and am ready to take on more responsibilities. I feel like I have developed many of the skills necessary to succeed as a hostess, including excellent communication and customer service skills. I also think I would enjoy working at this restaurant because it seems like an exciting place to work.”

What makes working as a hostess rewarding for you?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your motivations for working as a hostess. They want to know what you enjoy most about the job and how it helps you grow professionally. When answering this question, think of specific examples from your previous experience that highlight why you love being a hostess.

Example: “I find working as a hostess rewarding because I get to meet so many different people every day. In my last role, I met a lot of new customers who were excited to try our restaurant’s food. It was fun to see their reactions when they tried our dishes and enjoyed them. I also found it rewarding to help other employees with tasks like seating guests or taking orders. I feel like we all worked together to create an enjoyable dining experience for everyone.”

What do you think are the challenges of being a successful hostess?

This question can help the interviewer understand your perspective on this role. They may want to know how you would handle challenges that arise in this position, such as working with a large crowd or managing multiple tasks at once. Consider what skills and experiences you have that could help you overcome these challenges.
