What are the most important elements of a successful health and safety program?

This question can help the interviewer determine your understanding of what it takes to create a successful health and safety program. Your answer should include several elements that you believe are important for creating a safe work environment, such as employee training, equipment maintenance and communication between management and employees.

Example: “A successful health and safety program starts with having an effective policy in place. This is because policies provide guidelines for how we’re supposed to conduct ourselves at work and ensure that everyone’s on the same page when it comes to following procedures. I also think regular training is essential, as this helps employees understand their roles within the company and learn about new processes or changes to existing ones. How would you rate our current health and safety program? What changes would you make if you were hired?

Describe your experience performing environmental audits.

Hiring managers may ask this question to learn more about your experience with environmental audits. They may also want to know how you performed the audit and what you found during it. Use examples from your past work experience to describe how you completed an audit and what you discovered.

Example: “In my previous role, I was responsible for completing monthly environmental audits of our facility. During each audit, I would walk through the entire building to check for any safety hazards or violations. If I noticed something that needed attention, I reported it to my supervisor so they could address it. In one instance, I found a loose electrical wire in the basement of the building. Which health and safety management certifications do you hope to earn in the future?

What do you think is the most important aspect of being a HSE manager?

How often do you perform safety inspections?

In your answer, explain how you would handle the situation by providing specific steps that you would take.

Example: “I would first meet with both employees separately to understand their perspectives on the issue. Then I would speak with them together to see if there was a compromise they could make. If not, I would let them know that I would need to implement a solution that benefits everyone involved. I would then choose the best option based on what’s most important to the company.”
