How to Write an IT Specialist Resume

Here’s how to write an IT specialist resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

The best way to make your resume stand out is to use specific examples and numbers. Rather than saying you “managed IT systems,” you could say that you “managed IT systems for 20+ employees, ensuring smooth operation of all systems and no downtime during busy holiday season.”

The second bullet point is much stronger because it provides specific details about what you did and the results of your work. It also includes a number—20+—which helps quantify your experience and makes it easy for the reader to understand how significant your role was.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

Keywords are used in resumes to help applicant tracking systems (ATS) find the right candidates. ATS programs scan resumes for specific terms related to the job opening. If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right keywords, the ATS might filter out your application.

To make sure your resume makes it past the ATS, use this list of keywords as a starting point to help you identify the skills and experience that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for.

  • Windows Server
  • Active Directory
  • ITIL
  • IT Service Management
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • SQL
  • System Administration
  • VMware
  • Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 10
  • Networking
  • Powershell
  • Virtualization
  • IT Management
  • Troubleshooting
  • Servers
  • Group Policy
  • Operating Systems
  • Software Installation

  • IT Outsourcing
  • IT Hardware Support
  • Office 365
  • Technical Support
  • Network Administration
  • Technical Support Management
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  • Project Management
  • Vendor Management

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As an IT specialist, you are responsible for the maintenance and security of the organization’s computer systems. In order to do this effectively, you need to be proficient in a variety of programs and systems.

Some of the programs and systems that IT specialists commonly use include: Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Apple OS X, and Linux. Additionally, IT specialists often need to be familiar with network security concepts and tools, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems.
