How to Write an IT Support Resume

Here’s how to write an IT support resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can make your resume more interesting by using bullet points to describe the results of your work.

For example, rather than saying you “provided IT support for 50 users,” you could say you “provided IT support for 50 users, resulting in a 95% uptime rate, the highest in the company.”

The second bullet point paints a clear picture of what the project entailed and how you contributed to the company’s success. And it provides a quantifiable result—a 95% uptime rate—that makes it clear how significant your contribution was.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

Keywords are an essential part of your resume, especially if you’re applying online. The recruiter will use the keywords to help determine whether you’re a good fit for the job. If your resume doesn’t have enough of the right keywords, it might not make it past the applicant tracking system (ATS).

There are many ways to add keywords to your resume. You can include them in the work experience, skills summary, or education section. You can also use them in the work history summary or skills list.

Here are some common IT support keywords:

  • IT Support
  • Troubleshooting
  • Active Directory
  • Windows Server
  • Networking
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 10
  • Computer Hardware
  • Office 365
  • ITIL
  • Technical Support
  • IT Service Management
  • Servers
  • VMware
  • Software Installation
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Printer Support
  • Windows
  • Operating Systems
  • Laptops
  • Microsoft Access
  • Network Administration
  • Virtualization
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • Network Security
  • IT Hardware Support
  • Programming
  • Software Support
  • Office Administration
  • Windows XP

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As an IT support professional, you rely on specific programs, systems, and applications to do your job. That’s why it’s important to list your technical skills prominently on your resume. By doing so, you’ll show that you’re a valuable candidate who is familiar with the essential tools and systems used in your field.

Recruiters are looking for IT support professionals who are proficient in specific programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Windows operating systems, and Apple Mac systems. They also want to see that you have experience with specific systems and methodologies, such as help desk ticketing systems and ITIL. So be sure to list all of your relevant technical skills prominently on your resume.
