As a kitchen assistant, you’re responsible for helping the head chef in the kitchen by preparing ingredients, cooking food, and cleaning the kitchen. This is a great position for those who want to work in the culinary industry but don’t want to be a head chef.

In order to get the job, you’ll need to go through a job interview. During the interview, you’ll be asked questions about your experience in the kitchen, your knowledge of food safety, and your ability to follow instructions.

Are you comfortable working in a fast-paced environment?

Working in a busy kitchen can be hectic, and employers ask this question to make sure you’re comfortable with that. They want someone who is able to work quickly while still maintaining quality standards. In your answer, explain how you stay organized and focused when working under pressure.

Example: “I am very comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. I thrive on the energy of a busy kitchen and enjoy being part of a team that works together to get orders out as quickly as possible. I have always been good at staying organized, so I find it easy to keep track of multiple tasks at once. I also like to multitask, which helps me move through my day more efficiently.”

What are your greatest strengths as a kitchen assistant?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your personality and how you would fit in with their team. When answering, think of a few strengths that relate to the job description or the kitchen assistant role. Some examples include:

Communication skills Time management skills Problem-solving skills Example: “I have excellent communication skills, which is why I am so good at helping my coworkers when they need help. I also have strong time management skills, which helps me stay organized and on track with my tasks. Finally, I have problem-solving skills, which allows me to find solutions to issues quickly.”

How would you describe your work ethic?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your work ethic and how you approach your job. They want to know that you are a hard worker who is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. When answering, think of an example from your past where you worked especially hard or stayed late at work.

Example: “I have always been someone who approaches my work with a positive attitude. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to get the job done. In my last position, we were short-staffed one night, so I volunteered to stay late to help out. We got everything ready for service, and no customers even noticed that we were understaffed.”

What is your experience with food preparation?

This question can help the interviewer determine your level of experience in a kitchen. It can also show them how you feel about food preparation and what kind of work you’ve done in the past. If you have no previous experience, consider talking about an interest or hobby that involves cooking or baking.

Example: “I worked as a server for five years before I got this position. In my last job, I learned to make many different dishes from scratch. I would often get requests from customers who wanted something specific, so I had to learn how to modify recipes to accommodate their needs. This helped me develop my creativity when it came to making new dishes.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer or client.

Employers ask this question to see how you handle conflict. They want to know that you can remain calm and professional in stressful situations. In your answer, try to focus on the steps you took to resolve the situation. Try not to mention any specific names or details about the incident.

Example: “I once had a customer who was upset because they didn’t like their meal. I listened to them explain why they were unhappy and apologized for their experience. I offered to remake their meal at no charge. The customer accepted my offer and seemed satisfied with our resolution. After they left, I discussed the situation with my manager so we could make sure it didn’t happen again.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

This question is a way for employers to learn more about your personality. They want to know what kind of person you are and how you would fit into their kitchen environment. Your answer should show that you’re fun, creative and passionate about food.

Example: “If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to teleport anywhere in the world instantly. This would allow me to taste all kinds of different foods from around the globe. I love trying new dishes and learning about other cultures. It’s one of my favorite things to do when traveling.”

What would you do if you noticed another kitchen assistant was not following safety procedures?

Employers ask this question to make sure you are committed to following safety procedures in the kitchen. They want to know that you will speak up if you see a coworker not following protocol and that you can help them understand why it’s important to follow these rules. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to ensure your colleague follows the rules and stays safe while working in the kitchen.

Example: “If I noticed another kitchen assistant was not following safety procedures, I would first approach them privately to let them know they were breaking the rules. If they understood my concerns but continued to break the rules, I would bring it to the attention of my supervisor so they could address the issue.”

How well do you follow directions?

Employers ask this question to make sure you can follow their instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner. This is especially important if they have specific ways of doing things that are different from the way your previous employer did them. Use your answer to show that you’re willing to learn new methods and adapt quickly.

Example: “I am very good at following directions, which is one reason I’m excited for this position. I know there are some differences between how my current employer does things and how you do things here, so I’m looking forward to learning more about those differences. I also understand that sometimes things change on the fly, so I’m ready to adapt as needed.”

Do you have any experience working with large quantities of food?

This question can help the interviewer determine if you have experience working in a busy kitchen environment. If you do, they may ask you to describe your previous experiences and how they helped you develop skills that are beneficial for this role. If you don’t have any experience with large quantities of food, you can talk about other relevant work experience.

Example: “In my last position as a line cook, I was responsible for preparing meals for hundreds of people each day. This required me to be organized and efficient when it came to making sure all orders were ready on time. It also taught me how to manage multiple tasks at once while still maintaining quality standards.”

When was a time you made a mistake and what did you do to try and fix it?

Employers ask this question to see how you respond to mistakes and learn from them. They want to know that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions, apologize when necessary and try to fix the mistake. When answering this question, be honest about a time you made a mistake in the past and explain what steps you took to correct it.

Example: “In my last position as a kitchen assistant, I was responsible for making sure all of the prep work was done before service started. One night, I forgot to prepare one of our specials. My manager noticed right away and asked me why it wasn’t ready. I apologized and explained that I had forgotten to do it. She told me she understood but that next time I needed to make sure I did everything on time. I learned from this experience to always double-check my list before beginning service.”

We want to ensure our customers are happy with the quality of our food. What would you do if a customer complained about the taste of one of our dishes?

The interviewer may ask you a question like this to assess your customer service skills. Use examples from past experiences where you helped customers with their concerns and resolved the issue to show that you can be helpful in resolving problems for others.

Example: “If a customer complained about the taste of one of our dishes, I would first apologize and offer them another dish or a refund if they wanted it. Then, I would go back into the kitchen to see what the chef was doing with the dish. If there were any changes I could make to improve the flavor, I would let the chef know so they could adjust the recipe.”

Describe your experience with using kitchen equipment.

This question can help the interviewer determine your comfort level with using kitchen equipment and tools. Use examples from previous experience to highlight your skills, knowledge and abilities in this area.

Example: “I have worked as a line cook for three years now, so I am very familiar with most of the common kitchen equipment. However, I still enjoy learning about new equipment and techniques that chefs use. In my last position, I learned how to use a mandolin slicer to cut vegetables into different sizes. This was helpful when preparing meals because it allowed me to prepare multiple dishes at once.”

What makes you the best candidate for this position?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and how you feel about the job. Before your interview, make a list of all your skills and experiences that relate to this position. Think about what makes you unique compared to other candidates.

Example: “I am passionate about food and cooking, which is why I’m pursuing a career in this field. Throughout my college program, I learned many different techniques for preparing meals and working with various ingredients. My internship at a local restaurant also taught me valuable customer service skills. I think these experiences make me an excellent candidate for this role.”

Which cooking techniques do you have the most experience with?

This question can help the interviewer determine your level of experience in a kitchen. It also helps them understand what you’re most comfortable with and how much training you may need to complete tasks that are new to you. When answering this question, list the cooking techniques you have the most experience with and explain why they’re your favorite.

Example: “I’ve had the most experience working with sautéing, grilling and frying because I worked as a line cook at my last job. I really enjoy these techniques because I find them to be the most versatile when it comes to creating different dishes. For example, I could use sautéing to prepare an appetizer, main course or dessert.”

What do you think is the most important trait for a successful kitchen assistant?

Employers ask this question to see if you have the skills and abilities needed for the job. They want someone who is organized, friendly and hardworking. When answering this question, think about what traits helped you succeed in previous roles. Try to pick a trait that relates to your experience.

Example: “I believe the most important trait for a successful kitchen assistant is communication. In my last role as a kitchen assistant, I was responsible for communicating with other kitchen staff members when there were any questions or concerns. It’s also important to communicate with the chef so they know how things are going on their station. This helps them feel more comfortable delegating tasks.”

How often do you see yourself growing in this role?

Employers ask this question to see if you have a long-term career plan. They want to know that you’re not just looking for a job, but rather a career in the kitchen. Your answer should include your goals and how you hope to achieve them.

Example: “I would love to grow into a chef one day. I’m currently taking culinary classes at night so that I can learn more about cooking techniques and recipes. I think working as an assistant will help me get there because it’ll give me more experience in the kitchen. Eventually, I’d like to open my own restaurant.”

There is a problem with the dishwashing machine and you need to put off cleaning the kitchen until the next shift. What would you do?

This question is designed to test your problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize tasks. Your answer should show that you can use critical thinking to solve problems, communicate with others and manage time effectively.

Example: “If there was a problem with the dishwashing machine during my shift, I would first try to fix it myself. If I couldn’t figure out what was wrong, I would call for help from the head chef or supervisor. In the meantime, I would clean as many dishes by hand as possible so that we could start serving customers again as soon as possible. I would also make sure that all other kitchen staff were aware of the situation so they could prepare themselves accordingly.”
