What are your greatest strengths as a kitchen assistant?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your personality and how you would fit in with their team. When answering, think of a few strengths that relate to the job description or the kitchen assistant role. Some examples include:

If you have no previous experience, consider talking about an interest or hobby that involves cooking or baking.

Example: “I worked as a server for five years before I got this position. In my last job, I learned to make many different dishes from scratch. I would often get requests from customers who wanted something specific, so I had to learn how to modify recipes to accommodate their needs. Provide an example of a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer or client.

What would you do if you noticed another kitchen assistant was not following safety procedures?

Employers ask this question to make sure you are committed to following safety procedures in the kitchen. They want to know that you will speak up if you see a coworker not following protocol and that you can help them understand why it’s important to follow these rules. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to ensure your colleague follows the rules and stays safe while working in the kitchen.

Example: “If I noticed another kitchen assistant was not following safety procedures, I would first approach them privately to let them know they were breaking the rules. How well do you follow directions?

When was a time you made a mistake and what did you do to try and fix it?

They want to know that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions, apologize when necessary and try to fix the mistake. When answering this question, be honest about a time you made a mistake in the past and explain what steps you took to correct it.

Example: “In my last position as a kitchen assistant, I was responsible for making sure all of the prep work was done before service started. One night, I forgot to prepare one of our specials. My manager noticed right away and asked me why it wasn’t ready. I apologized and explained that I had forgotten to do it. She told me she understood but that next time I needed to make sure I did everything on time. I learned from this experience to always double-check my list before beginning service.”

We want to ensure our customers are happy with the quality of our food. What would you do if a customer complained about the taste of one of our dishes?

The interviewer may ask you a question like this to assess your customer service skills. Use examples from past experiences where you helped customers with their concerns and resolved the issue to show that you can be helpful in resolving problems for others.

Example: “If a customer complained about the taste of one of our dishes, I would first apologize and offer them another dish or a refund if they wanted it. Then, I would go back into the kitchen to see what the chef was doing with the dish. If there were any changes I could make to improve the flavor, I would let the chef know so they could adjust the recipe.”

Describe your experience with using kitchen equipment.

This question can help the interviewer determine your comfort level with using kitchen equipment and tools. Use examples from previous experience to highlight your skills, knowledge and abilities in this area.

Example: “I have worked as a line cook for three years now, so I am very familiar with most of the common kitchen equipment. However, I still enjoy learning about new equipment and techniques that chefs use. In my last position, I learned how to use a mandolin slicer to cut vegetables into different sizes. This was helpful when preparing meals because it allowed me to prepare multiple dishes at once.”

What makes you the best candidate for this position?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and how you feel about the job. Before your interview, make a list of all your skills and experiences that relate to this position. Think about what makes you unique compared to other candidates.

Example: “I am passionate about food and cooking, which is why I’m pursuing a career in this field. Throughout my college program, I learned many different techniques for preparing meals and working with various ingredients. Which cooking techniques do you have the most experience with?

This question can help the interviewer determine your level of experience in a kitchen. This question is designed to test your problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize tasks. Your answer should show that you can use critical thinking to solve problems, communicate with others and manage time effectively.

Example: “If there was a problem with the dishwashing machine during my shift, I would first try to fix it myself. If I couldn’t figure out what was wrong, I would call for help from the head chef or supervisor. In the meantime, I would clean as many dishes by hand as possible so that we could start serving customers again as soon as possible. I would also make sure that all other kitchen staff were aware of the situation so they could prepare themselves accordingly.”
