How to Write a Legal Project Manager Resume

Here’s how to write a resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can make your bullet points much more interesting and compelling by using them to tell a story about your work.

For example, rather than saying you “managed projects for legal department,” you could say that you “managed 20+ projects for legal department, resulting in a 15% increase in case closure rate over 18-month period.”

The second bullet point is much more interesting and provides a lot more detail about what exactly you did and the results of your work.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you apply for a legal project manager role, your resume will likely be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. These programs look for certain terms, like “project management” and “administrative support” to determine whether your experience is a match for the job you’ve applied to. If you’re missing some of the most important keywords, your resume might not make it past the initial screening process.

To increase your chances of getting noticed, use this list of legal project manager keywords as a starting point to help you optimize your resume:

  • Legal Advice
  • Legal Research
  • Litigation
  • Legal Writing
  • Corporate Law
  • Commercial Litigation
  • Intellectual Property
  • Legal Document Preparation
  • Contract Law
  • Corporate Governance
  • Civil Litigation
  • Legal Consulting
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Legal Compliance
  • International Law
  • Business Strategy
  • Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)
  • Change Management
  • Labor and Employment Law
  • Due Diligence
  • Negotiation
  • Litigation Management
  • Contract Negotiation
  • Project Management
  • Civil Law
  • Arbitration
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Law
  • Commercial Contracts
  • Joint Ventures

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As a legal project manager, you need to be proficient in a variety of software programs in order to successfully track and complete your work. Programs like Microsoft Project, Asana, Jira, SharePoint, and Trello are essential for project managers, as they allow you to keep track of tasks, deadlines, and progress. Additionally, legal project managers need to be familiar with legal-specific software programs, like Westlaw and LexisNexis.

So if you have experience with any of these programs, be sure to list them on your resume. And if you’re not familiar with them, now is the time to learn them!
