Focus on the Future

When applying for a job as a mechanical engineer, focus your cover letter on what you can bring to the company in the future. Think about how you can help grow and develop the organization from its current state. You might mention that there is a certain area of study or product line you’re particularly interested in, and that it would be interesting to work on this aspect of business because of your specific skillset.

Focus on specific experience

Mechanical engineers have a unique responsibility in ensuring that products and machinery are functional, efficient, and safe. For this reason, it’s important to show employers that you have the required knowledge and skills to do this job well. But when writing your cover letter for a mechanical engineering position, focus on specific examples of when you have done so in the past. This will allow hiring managers to know what to expect from you if they choose to bring you in for an interview.

Show Your Skills with Math and Science

For a job as a mechanical engineer, employers want to see that you have strong skills in math and science. To show your skills in these areas, emphasize how your experience with geometry, trigonometry, chemistry or physics has contributed to previous work projects. If possible, provide numbers when describing how you used specific mathematical formulas or concepts to make things more understandable for non-math professionals.

Eliminate grammar mistakes in your cover letter

A mechanical engineer’s cover letter is an opportunity to demonstrate creativity, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. If your cover letter has many errors, the hiring manager may wonder if you possess these characteristics.

Use spell check on your computer and proofread your work carefully before submitting it. You can also ask a friend or family member to look over your work for any errors you may have missed. If possible, enlist the aid of an experienced writer who can help polish up your cover letter.
