A nurse clinician is an advanced practice registered nurse who provides direct patient care and also educates patients and their families about various health conditions. Nurse clinicians often specialize in a particular area of medicine, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, or oncology.

To become a nurse clinician, you must first become a registered nurse and then complete a Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing. Once you have fulfilled these requirements, you will be eligible to take the national nurse clinician certification exam. After passing the exam, you will be able to apply for nurse clinician jobs.

How would you describe the relationship between a nurse clinician and a physician?

Example: “I believe a nurse clinician and physician must have an excellent working relationship. A nurse clinician is responsible for assessing patients and determining their treatment plans, while a physician has the medical expertise to prescribe specific treatments. I am always respectful of my colleagues’ opinions and willing to listen to any concerns they may have about my care plan. In return, I expect them to be open to hearing my ideas and suggestions.”

What is your experience with working with patients who have a mental illness?

Working with patients who have a mental illness is an important part of being a nurse clinician. Employers ask this question to make sure you are prepared for working with these types of patients and that you can handle the unique challenges they may present. In your answer, explain what experience you have working with mentally ill patients and how you would approach it if you were hired.

Example: “I’ve worked with many patients who have a mental illness in my previous role as a registered nurse. I am comfortable talking about their diagnosis and helping them understand their treatment plan. Provide an example of a time when you provided holistic care to a patient.

If a patient was not improving with your current treatment plan, how would you handle it?

This question can help interviewers understand how you respond to challenges and make decisions. When answering, it can be helpful to describe a specific situation in which you helped a patient overcome an obstacle or improved their treatment plan.

Example: “If I noticed that a patient wasn’t improving with the current treatment plan, I would first try to determine if there was anything else we could do for them within our facility. If not, I would discuss my concerns with the physician so they could decide on a new course of action. In this case, I worked with the doctor to develop a new treatment plan that included additional medication and therapy.”

What would you do if you noticed another nurse treating a patient in a way that you felt was unsafe?

As a nurse clinician, you may be responsible for supervising other nurses. An interviewer might ask this question to learn more about your leadership skills and how you would handle conflict with another employee. In your answer, try to show that you can use your communication skills to resolve the situation in a positive way.

How well do you handle stress? Can you provide an example from your previous job where you experienced stress?

In your answer, try to explain that you are able to remain calm under pressure and provide an example of a time when you handled stress well.

Example: “I am someone who is naturally calm and collected, so I have experience handling stressful situations. At my previous job, I had to work with a patient who was experiencing severe pain. The patient became upset because they wanted immediate relief from their pain but we could not give them any medication for it. I stayed calm and explained to the patient why we couldn’t administer the medication yet. This helped the patient feel better and calmed them down.”

Do you have experience performing physical assessments on patients?

This question can help interviewers understand your experience with physical assessments and how you perform them. When answering, it can be helpful to mention a specific time when you performed a physical assessment on a patient and the results of that assessment.

Example: “Yes, I have performed many physical assessments in my previous role as a nurse clinician. In fact, one of my favorite parts of the job was performing these assessments because I got to meet new patients every day. One time, I met a patient who had been experiencing pain in their knee for quite some time. After performing a physical assessment, I found out that they were actually suffering from an injury to their ankle. This led me to refer them to another specialist so they could get the treatment they needed.”

When performing a mental health assessment, what are the first questions you ask?

Mental health assessments are an important part of the nurse clinician’s job. The interviewer may ask this question to see how you prioritize your tasks and assess a patient’s mental health status. In your answer, explain what questions you would ask during a mental health assessment and why these questions are important.

Example: “The first thing I do when performing a mental health assessment is listen to my patients. Listening carefully to their concerns can help me understand what they’re experiencing and determine if there are any immediate safety risks. Next, I ask them about their sleep patterns, moods and stress levels. These questions help me get a better idea of whether or not they have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions.”

We want to improve our communication with patients about their treatment plans. Can you give an example from your previous job where you improved communication?

Describe your experience with delivering babies.

This question is a common one for nurse clinicians to answer. It helps employers understand your experience level and how you might fit into their team. If you have no direct experience, consider describing what you’ve learned from others or any research you’ve done on the topic.

What makes you stand out from other nurse clinicians?
