Nurse Paralegal Resume Example & Writing Guide

Use this Nurse Paralegal resume example and guide to improve your career and write a powerful resume that will separate you from the competition.

A nurse paralegal is a highly specialized type of paralegal who works primarily with nurses and other healthcare professionals. Nurse paralegals are usually found in hospitals and doctor’s offices, where they help nurses and other medical professionals with administrative tasks like filing insurance claims, processing invoices, and updating patient records. They also help with more complex matters like drafting legal documents and preparing court testimony.

Because there are so many unique regulations governing healthcare, nurse paralegals often have a lot of specialized knowledge about how healthcare law works. They’re also familiar with HIPAA regulations, which govern how medical information can be used and shared, and how medical records should be kept private and secure.

Here are some tips for writing a great nurse paralegal resume plus an example to look at when building yours.

How to Write a Nurse Paralegal Resume

Here’s how to write a resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most important part of your resume because they’re the first thing recruiters will see. And they’re the best way to showcase your experience and skills.

But many applicants make the mistake of using generic bullet points that don’t really tell a story or provide any detail about their experience.

Instead, you should use your bullet points to tell a story about your experience. And that story should be as specific as possible.

For example, rather than saying you “provided administrative support for attorneys,” you could say you “provided administrative support for attorneys in a large law firm, managing calendars, scheduling meetings, and drafting documents for review by senior partners.”

The second bullet point provides much more detail about the nature of the work and the level of responsibility. And it also provides a specific example of the work you did—something the first bullet point lacks.

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you submit your resume online, it’s likely that it will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. These programs look for certain terms related to the job opening in order to determine whether your skills and experience are a match. If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right terms, the ATS might discard your application.

One way to make sure your resume makes it past the ATS is to include relevant nurse paralegal keywords throughout all sections of your document. Here are some of the most common nurse paralegal keywords:

  • Legal Advice
  • Legal Research
  • Litigation
  • Legal Writing
  • Legal Document Preparation
  • Healthcare
  • Healthcare Management
  • Paralegals
  • Hospitals
  • Patient Safety
  • Elder Law
  • Nursing
  • Hospitals & Clinics
  • Mediation
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Medical Malpractice
  • Mediation
  • Nurse Manager
  • Personal Injury Law
  • Legal Opinions
  • Document Drafting
  • Commercial Litigation
  • Civil Litigation
  • Intellectual Property
  • Appeals
  • Legal Document Review
  • Document Review
  • Trials
  • Westlaw
  • Arbitration

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As a nurse paralegal, you need to be proficient in the use of technology, like legal research databases and case management software. You also need to have experience with specific programs, like Microsoft Office Suite and Westlaw. Being able to list your level of expertise in each area will show that you’re a valuable asset to any law firm.
