How to Write a Painter Resume

Here’s how to write a painter resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can use them to tell a story about your work. For example, rather than saying you “painted walls in new house,” you could say you “painted walls in new house in under eight hours, using just one gallon of paint and no brushes, to meet client’s deadline.”

The second bullet point is much more interesting and compelling, right? It provides more detail about what you did and why it was important. And it even includes a quantifiable result—eight hours! That’s much more interesting than saying you “painted walls.”

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you submit your resume online, it’s likely that it will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. These programs look for certain terms that are relevant to the job opening in order to determine whether or not you’re a good fit. So, if you want your resume to make it through the ATS, it’s important to include keywords that are relevant to the job opening you’re applying for.

The most commonly used painter keywords are:

  • Painting
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Decorative Painting
  • House Painting
  • Drywall
  • Wallpaper
  • Construction
  • Carpentry
  • Contracting
  • Renovation
  • Home Improvement
  • Drywall Finishing
  • Residential Painting
  • Ceiling
  • Custom Painting
  • AutoCAD
  • Flooring
  • Construction Management
  • Interior Design
  • Blueprint Reading
  • Visual Arts
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • SketchUp
  • Drawing
  • Arts
  • Graphic Design
  • Art
  • Acrylic Painting
  • Fine Art
  • Fresco

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As a painter, you need to be proficient in the use of a variety of tools and materials. This might include experience with specific paint brands, types of paint application, and surface preparation. Additionally, many painters now use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create their designs, so experience with this type of software is also beneficial.
