Paralegal Cover Letter Writing Tips

Highlight your general knowledge of law

In addition to an understanding of how the legal system works, a paralegal is responsible for managing documents and court proceedings. As such, it’s likely that you possess a wide variety of general knowledge about the law.

Show how this translates into value for the company by showcasing your grasp on key concepts in contracts, corporate governance and litigation. You might also want to include where you acquired this knowledge: through additional coursework or other professional development opportunities.

Show Your Skills

To avoid sounding generic, show the hiring manager how your skills are tailored to their job opening.

In your cover letter, list three or four skills you have that will help you do well in the role. For example, if they’re looking for someone with strong research and writing skills, mention that you consistently produce top-quality work on tight deadlines and are a great writer. Make sure these statements back up your claims with specific examples from past jobs.

Show your passion for the law

A cover letter is a great opportunity to show potential employers that you’re passionate about the law and that you have a solid foundation of knowledge.

When drafting your letter, discuss what led you to this career. You can mention any relevant experiences such as internships or coursework related to the job at hand. Also, include how working in this field will benefit society, using examples from past cases or news stories. Finally, explain how you plan on contributing your unique skills and abilities to help the company succeed in their goals.

Proofread your cover letter to avoid rejection

Cover letters for paralegals require attention to detail and strong writing skills. Prove you’re the right fit by presenting hiring managers with a well-written and error-free cover letter.

When you finish writing your cover letter, edit and proofread it. If possible, ask someone you trust to help you look over your work. Proofreading your cover letter is crucial for proving you can work as a paralegal, as even a slight error at work could lead to many negative consequences for clients involved in pending litigation or investigations.
