As a portfolio manager, you’ll be responsible for overseeing a diverse set of properties, assets, or assets under management. You’ll be tasked with analyzing the performance of your assets and reporting on their status to stakeholders. And you’ll do everything in your power to increase the value of your portfolio.
If you’re interested in a career that allows you to be hands-on while still working within a larger organization, you might want to consider becoming a real estate portfolio manager. But before you can land this job, you need to write a compelling portfolio manager resume that will convince hiring managers that you’re the right person for the job.
Here’s how to write a resume of your own.
When it comes to writing bullet points, the more specific you can be, the better. Rather than saying you “managed real estate portfolio,” you could say that you “managed $10 million real estate portfolio, including 10 commercial properties and 50 residential units, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.”
The second bullet point is much more specific and provides a clear sense of the scale and scope of the project. It also provides a quantifiable measure of the project by mentioning the dollar value of the portfolio.
When you submit your resume online, it’s likely that it will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. This program looks for certain terms that are relevant to the job opening, like “real estate” or “market analysis.” If your resume doesn’t have enough of the right keywords, the ATS might filter out your application.
To increase your chances of getting an interview, make sure to include relevant keywords throughout all the sections of your resume, especially in the work experience and skills sections. Here are some of the most commonly used real estate portfolio manager keywords:
As a real estate portfolio manager, you need to be proficient in a variety of software programs and systems in order to effectively manage your portfolio. Programs like Yardi, MRI, and RealPage are essential for managing large portfolios of properties. Additionally, real estate portfolio managers need to be proficient in Excel in order to track data and create reports.
Real estate portfolio managers should also have a solid understanding of financial concepts and principles. This includes being able to read and understand financial statements, as well as having a working knowledge of investment strategies and portfolio management techniques.
