Resident assistants, or RAs, are responsible for providing support to students living in a college or university residence hall. They offer guidance and assistance with academic, personal, and social issues, and they also create a community atmosphere in the residence hall.

An RA job interview will likely focus on your ability to handle difficult situations, your communication and problem-solving skills, and your knowledge of residence hall life. In this guide, you’ll find responses to some common RA interview questions that will help you prepare for your interview.

Are you comfortable living with a diverse group of people?

Resident assistants often live with a variety of people, including those from different backgrounds. Employers ask this question to make sure you’re comfortable living in such an environment. In your answer, explain that you are open-minded and accepting of others. Explain that you would be able to help anyone who may feel uncomfortable or unwelcome.

Example: “I am very comfortable living with a diverse group of people. I grew up in a small town where everyone was the same. When I went to college, I learned how much more there is to learn about other cultures and lifestyles. I think it’s important to understand each other so we can get along better as a society. If someone ever felt uncomfortable here, I would do everything I could to make them feel welcome.”

What are some of the most important qualities for a successful resident assistant?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your personal qualities and how they relate to the role of a resident assistant. Use examples from your experience that show you have these qualities, such as leadership skills, communication abilities or problem-solving skills.

Example: “A successful RA needs to be someone who can motivate others while also being approachable. I think it’s important for an RA to be someone who is organized and responsible because they are in charge of overseeing many aspects of their residents’ lives. A good RA should also be someone who has strong conflict resolution skills and can resolve issues quickly and fairly.”

How would you handle a conflict with a roommate or another resident?

Resident assistants often have to resolve conflicts with other residents. Employers ask this question to make sure you can handle conflict resolution effectively and fairly. In your answer, explain how you would approach the situation and what steps you would take to solve it.

Example: “I would first try to talk to my roommate or resident about the issue. If that didn’t work, I would speak to our RA or another staff member for help. I would also try to find a compromise if possible. For example, if one person wanted to play their music loudly while the other wanted quiet, I might suggest they use headphones instead of speakers.”

What is your experience with working with students?

This question can help the interviewer determine your experience with working with students and how you interact with them. If you have previous experience as a resident assistant, share what you learned from that position. If you don’t have any prior experience, explain what you would do to work well with students in this role.

Example: “I worked as an RA for two years at my university. During that time, I learned how important it is to be approachable and available to students who need support or guidance. I also learned how to communicate effectively with students so they understand why I’m asking them to leave their rooms or quiet down.”

Provide an example of a time when you helped to resolve a problem between two students.

If a student came to you with a question about campus policies, how would you respond?

An RA needs to be able to answer questions about campus policies and procedures. This question helps the interviewer determine how you would handle a situation like this one. In your answer, explain that you would first make sure you understand the student’s question before providing an answer. You should also mention that you would provide clear and concise answers to any questions they have.

Example: “If a student came to me with a question about campus policies, I would first make sure I understood their question. Then, I would look up the policy or procedure in our handbook or online to find the information they were looking for. If it was something I didn’t know, I would do my best to find out the answer from someone else. Finally, I would provide them with a clear and concise explanation of the policy or procedure.”

What would you do if you noticed two of your residents engaging in inappropriate behavior?

Resident assistants often have to deal with challenging situations. Employers ask this question to make sure you can handle these types of scenarios. In your answer, explain how you would respond to the situation and what steps you would take to resolve it.

Example: “If I noticed two residents engaging in inappropriate behavior, I would first try to get their attention. If they didn’t stop, I would tell them that if they don’t comply, I will call security. This is a last resort because I want to avoid calling security unless absolutely necessary. However, I know my responsibility as a resident assistant is to ensure the safety of all residents.”

How well do you know the campus and surrounding area?

The interviewer wants to know how familiar you are with the campus and surrounding area. This question is an opportunity for you to show your knowledge of the campus, local businesses and public transportation options. You can also use this question as an opportunity to express any concerns or frustrations you have about the campus or surrounding areas.

Example: “I am very familiar with the campus and surrounding area. I grew up in a small town nearby, so I’ve been visiting the university since I was a child. My family has season tickets to the football games, so we attend those regularly. I’m not as familiar with the city itself, but I do plan on exploring it more during my free time.”

Do you have any questions for me about the position?

This question is a great way for the interviewer to see how much you’ve researched about the position and whether you have any questions. It’s important to come prepared with at least one or two questions that show your interest in the role and help you learn more about it.

Example: “I do have a few questions, actually. First, I noticed there are three resident assistants on each floor of this building. How often would we all be working together? Also, what kind of training do you provide for us? Lastly, I’m really excited about the opportunity to work here because of the school’s reputation. Can you tell me more about the campus?”

When not working, what do you like to do in your free time?

This question is a great way to learn more about the candidate’s personality and interests. Interviewers ask this question to see if you will fit in with their community of residents. They want to know that you are someone who they would enjoy spending time with outside of work. In your answer, try to show that you have similar interests as the other residents. You can also mention any hobbies or activities that might help you get along with others.

Example: “In my free time, I love to spend time outdoors. I am an avid hiker, so I always bring my dog on long hikes through the trails here. I also like to go for bike rides around campus. I find it relaxing to be out in nature while getting some exercise. I think these things make me really compatible with many of the residents here.”

We want our residents to feel comfortable coming to us with questions or concerns. How would you approach a student you didn’t know?

As a resident assistant, you may meet students who are new to campus or the residence hall. The interviewer wants to know how you would approach these students and make them feel welcome. Use your answer to highlight your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with others.

Example: “I find that it’s important to be friendly and welcoming when I first meet someone. When I don’t know someone well, I try to ask open-ended questions about their interests and background. This helps me learn more about them while also making them feel comfortable talking to me. If they seem nervous, I will reassure them that I am here to help them in any way I can.”

Describe your communication style.

Resident assistants often need to communicate with students, faculty and other staff members. Interviewers ask this question to learn about your communication style and how you interact with others. Use examples from previous experiences to describe the way you communicate with others.

Example: “I find that I am a very empathetic communicator. When I speak with someone, I try to understand their perspective and respond in a way that shows I care about what they are saying. In my last role as resident assistant, I had a student who was struggling academically. I met with her one-on-one to discuss her concerns. She appreciated that I took time to listen to her and explain why she might be having trouble in class. She ended up getting an A on her next assignment.”

What makes you an ideal candidate for this position?

This question is an opportunity to show the interviewer that you have the skills and qualifications they are looking for. Before your interview, read through the job description to make sure you understand what the employer is looking for in a candidate. In your answer, highlight any of these skills or experiences that you possess.

Example: “I am passionate about helping others succeed. As a resident assistant, I would be available to help students with their questions and concerns. I also know how important it is to maintain a safe environment for all residents. My communication and conflict resolution skills will allow me to diffuse situations before they escalate into something more serious.”

Which dorms have you worked in before?

This question is a great way for the interviewer to learn more about your experience as an RA. If you have worked in multiple dorms, be sure to mention them all and what made each one unique.

Example: “I’ve only worked in my current dorm, but I love it here. The residents are so welcoming and friendly, which makes my job much easier. There’s also a lot of diversity among the students, which I think is really important. It’s nice to see that everyone gets along regardless of their background.”

What do you think is the most important skill for a resident assistant to possess?

This question is an opportunity to show the interviewer that you possess all of the skills necessary for this role. You can answer by listing several skills and explaining why they are important.

Example: “I think communication, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills are the most important for a resident assistant. I am always available to talk with residents who need someone to listen to them or help them solve a problem. In my previous position as a resident assistant, I was able to resolve many conflicts between students before they escalated into something more serious. Being able to communicate effectively and solve problems quickly helps keep everyone safe.”

How often would you update the residents about important campus events or announcements?

The interviewer wants to know how you would keep the residents informed about campus events and other important information. Showcase your communication skills by explaining how you would use various methods of communication, such as email, social media or in-person meetings.

Example: “I believe it’s important for residents to be aware of upcoming campus events and announcements. I would make sure that all residents are subscribed to my email list so they can receive updates on important dates and deadlines. In addition, I would also post reminders about important dates on our resident Facebook page and hold weekly meetings with the residents to discuss any changes.”

There is a disagreement between two of your residents. How would you handle it?

Resident assistants often act as mediators between residents. They must be able to resolve conflicts and disagreements in a calm, professional manner. Your answer should show the interviewer that you can use your conflict resolution skills to help students work through their problems.

Example: “I would first ask each resident what they think is causing the disagreement. I would then listen carefully to both sides of the story before making my own decision on how to handle the situation. If one student was being disrespectful or disruptive, I would speak with them privately about their behavior. If it happened again, I would take action by issuing a warning or removing them from the dorm.”
