What are some of the most important qualities for a successful site supervisor?

Employers ask this question to see if you have the skills and abilities needed for the job. They want someone who is organized, responsible and able to work well with others. When answering this question, think about what qualities helped you succeed in your previous roles. Try to highlight these traits as they relate to being a site supervisor.

Example: “I believe that one of the most important qualities for a successful site supervisor is communication. I know from experience how frustrating it can be when there’s miscommunication between team members. It’s essential to make sure everyone understands their responsibilities and knows how to get in touch with me or other supervisors. Another quality I find important is organization. How would you resolve a disagreement between two of your employees?

Do you have any experience using construction software or other digital tools to manage projects?

If you haven’t worked with these types of tools before, consider sharing other digital resources that you’ve used to help manage projects.

Next, I would look at any state or local regulations that might affect the building’s design. Finally, I would work with my team to determine the best way to meet these goals while staying within budget.”

Describe your process for ensuring that all of your workers are properly trained before starting a new project.

Example: “I’ve worked on several large-scale commercial construction projects in my career. One example is when I was working as a site supervisor for a new shopping center. We were behind schedule due to inclement weather, but we managed to get back on track by using our time wisely and delegating tasks to other workers. Another example is when I was working on a residential home renovation. The homeowner wanted us to complete the project within a short amount of time, so I had to delegate tasks to my team members and make sure they understood their roles.”

What do you think is the most challenging part of being a site supervisor?

Your answer should show that you understand the importance of making regular site visits, but also that you have strategies for motivating your team members while you’re away.

There is a disagreement between two of your employees about how to complete a task. How do you handle it?

Example: “In this situation, I would first make sure both employees understand the task they need to complete. Then, I would listen to each employee’s perspective and explain why one approach might be better than another. If neither employee has any questions, I would let them know that I expect them to work together to find a solution.”
