Software Developer Cover Letter Writing Tips

Explain your software development skills

There are many different types of software developers, and some companies have specific positions they’re looking to fill. Before applying for a job as a software developer, make sure you understand the company’s needs and that you can clearly explain how your experience matches their requirements.

For example, if you are applying for an entry-level position at a technology company, include how you learned programming languages like C# or Java in school. If the employer is looking for an experienced programmer who knows Python or Ruby on Rails, emphasize these skills in your cover letter. You can also mention any open source projects that relate to the position’s required technology stack.

Show your passion for coding

To get noticed by employers, you need to show that you’re a passionate programmer who will do whatever it takes to complete projects on time and on budget. Show employers that you’re the person they need to hire by including stories of how you’ve been successful in previous roles as a software developer. For example, highlight specific projects where you were able to complete them ahead of schedule or under budget.

Include a link to your GitHub account

One of the first things any hiring manager will do when evaluating your tech skills is review your code.

If you’re not a developer, or are applying for a role that doesn’t require coding, then having a GitHub account is unnecessary. But if you are applying for a software development position, include links to some of the projects you’ve worked on. This shows employers that not only have you been developing software, but also that you have the initiative and skill to work autonomously.

Proofread your cover letter

Software developers must write code that is precise and accurate, with few to no errors. As such, they must present their skills in a cover letter that is equally exacting. If you’re interested in becoming a software developer, proofread your cover letter before submission.
