Be Clear

Special education teachers require exceptional speaking ability in order to teach students with disabilities, as well as communicate effectively with parents and other members of administration. Demonstrate your communication skills by ensuring that your resume is clear and well-worded. If your prospective employer has difficulty comprehending your meaning, they will not have confidence in your ability to teach.

Be Specific

Include an objective statement, stating what you hope to achieve. It’s a good idea to mention the school by name—this will appeal to school pride, giving your prospective employer the impression that you want to work with them, as opposed to just any school. Also consider mentioning one or two qualities you could bring to the position—this will highlight your eligibility from the start.

Objective: To acquire the position of Special Education Teacher at Lake of the Woods Middle School, bringing my ample experience with autism and learning disorders.

Be Tech-savvy

Education has not been spared from the global push to adopt new technologies in every sector. Augmentative communication devices, digital picture communication symbols, Intellitools and other technologies and software have been brought into the classroom, particularly to facilitate the learning of children with special needs. Your familiarity with these, and any other technologies, will give you an advantage over other applicants, as you will bring a more robust arsenal of teaching approaches, allowing you a greater adaptive range, without requiring intensive training. Be sure to highlight these and other educational tools you have experience with, either in your “Main Skills,” or in a separate “Education Tools” section.

Tout Your Experience

List your work history in a “Professional Experience” section. Beginning with the most recent, list all of your teaching experience, including any of students without special education needs. If you lack sufficient work experience, feel free to note volunteer work or cooperative programs. Below each position, note your duties and primary contributions, selecting highlights that particularly apply to the job to which you are applying. Consider the importance of a special education teacher’s ability to adapt teaching approaches and subject material to the needs of individual children, and note the sorts of disabilities you have had experience with. This will give your prospective employer an idea of your resourcefulness, as well as provide a boon to your application if they have students with similar needs.

A teacher’s success comes one student at a time, and this is doubly true for special education teachers, whose every student provides a unique challenge. While listing duties in your professional experience, highlight improved test scores, communication breakthroughs and students’ job success stories. Wherever possible, include percentages or other data to quantify your success.

Flaunt Your Training

A career in education requires a robust education. Include an “Education” section on your resume, outlining your training and qualifications. Special education teaching generally requires a bachelor’s degree, at minimum. Be sure to list yours. Include the title, institution name, and year of completion. If you are working towards a degree at the time of application, include the projected year of completion.

Special Education Teacher Job Description

Special education teachers work with students who have learning impairments or other disabilities, such as autism, dyslexia, speech impairments, and physical disabilities. They assess each child’s capabilities, provide Individual Education Programs, and then adapt curriculum and devise teaching strategies to meet their students’ needs. Like teachers, special education teachers provide lesson materials, assign work and grade tests. They may work with a class, a small group, or a single student. They report progress to their students’ parents and school administration. They may teach material ranging from standard age-appropriate subjects to basic life skills—such as simple communication and appropriate behaviour—depending on the severity of their students’ disabilities. A special education teacher’s work can be stressful and emotionally taxing, but also hugely rewarding.

Special Education Teacher Earnings And Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics reports that, as of May 2020, the median annual wage for special education teachers is $61,420. Those earning higher wages tend to work in private secondary schools, and the highest earners of the profession are making over $100,160 per year. Bear in mind that these figures may only apply to the standard 10-month schoolyear, which most teachers work. Employment of special education teachers is projected to grow 3% between 2019-2029, just below the average for all U.S. jobs. Ample job opportunities will exist, however, as many positions open up each year as people leave the profession due to its stressful, emotionally and physically taxing nature.

Special Education Teacher Training And Qualifications

As mentioned above, special education teachers seeking employment with a public school are required to have a bachelor’s degree, generally in special education. Some states may require a master’s degree. Once the degree has been acquired, prospective special education teachers must become licensed. This certification is generally earned through an examination, preparatory program and/or supervised teaching period. Endorsements for specific disabilities are available, and even required, in some states. Teachers generally need to attend professional development courses or alternatives to retain their license.

Special education teachers need not be licensed to work at a private school, but they generally must still have a bachelor’s degree.
