When you’re interviewing for a job at, you can expect questions that assess your skills as a tutor, your knowledge of various academic subjects, and your ability to provide a great customer service experience.

To help you prepare, we’ve compiled a list of sample interview questions and answers. With these questions and answers in hand, you’ll be ready to show the interviewer that you’re the best candidate for the job. Interview Process

The interview process at is relatively fast and easy. After applying, candidates take subject tests in areas they want to tutor. Those who pass at least one subject test are then able to schedule an interview.

The interview itself is conducted using the company’s tutoring software. Questions are asked about the applicant’s experiences tutoring in the past, as well as hypothetical situations. The interview is primarily text-based, though there is an opportunity to use audio if desired.

Overall, the interview process is fairly straightforward and should not take more than an hour or so to complete.

Common Interview Questions

1. Tell me about your experience with tutoring.

This question is a great way to learn more about your potential employer’s expectations for tutors. If you’re applying for an in-person position, employers may want to know that you have experience working with students one-on-one. If you’re applying for an online position, they may be looking for someone who has experience teaching or training others.

Example: “I’ve been tutoring since I was in college. My first job out of school was as a tutor at my local community center. I worked there for three years before moving on to work for”

2. Do you have any teaching or tutoring certifications?

Employers may ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and experience. If you have certifications, be sure to list them in your answer. If you don’t, you can explain what other training or education you’ve received that makes you qualified for the role.

Example: “I am a certified teacher with a bachelor’s degree in English literature from State University. I also completed an online course on teaching methods and techniques through last year.”

3. What is the best way to encourage a student who is not motivated to learn?

A tutor needs to be able to motivate students and encourage them to learn. A hiring manager may ask this question to see if you have strategies for motivating students who are unmotivated or disengaged in their learning. In your answer, explain how you would approach a student who is not motivated to learn.

Example: “I believe that the best way to help a student who is not motivated to learn is by building a positive relationship with them. I would first try to understand why they are not motivated to learn. If it’s because of a specific subject, I would find ways to make the material more interesting and relevant to them. If it’s due to a lack of confidence, I would work hard to build up their self-esteem so they feel confident about their ability to learn.”

4. Are you able to tutor more than one subject if needed?

This question is a good way to determine if you have the ability to adapt to different learning styles and needs. It’s important that you can work with students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.

Example: “I am able to tutor more than one subject as long as I’m familiar with the material. In my last position, I was hired to help students prepare for their SATs. However, some students were also struggling in other subjects like math or English. I was able to use my knowledge of the test to help them understand how to apply what they learned in those subjects to the exam.”

5. How do you think online tutoring differs from in-person tutoring?

This question can help interviewers understand your experience with online tutoring and how you might approach it differently than in-person sessions. You can use this opportunity to highlight any unique skills or experiences that make you a good fit for the role.

Example: “I think there are many similarities between online and in-person tutoring, but I also believe there are some key differences. In my experience, students who take advantage of online tutoring often have more time to focus on their learning because they aren’t traveling to an appointment. This means they can be more prepared for each session and ask more questions. It’s important to me that I provide them with as much support as possible.”

6. Describe a time where you had to deal with a challenging student, how did you handle it?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe a specific situation where you had to deal with a challenging student and how you handled the situation.

7. Why do you want to work at

This question is an opportunity to show your enthusiasm for the role and company. When answering, it can be helpful to mention a specific aspect of the job that you are excited about or how you feel this position will help you grow as a professional.

Example: “I am passionate about education and believe in the power of one-to-one learning. I think is a great platform because it offers students personalized solutions to their unique needs. I also love working with technology, so I’m excited to use my skills to create engaging online lessons.”

9. Have you worked in the education industry before? If so, describe what you learned and took away from that experience.

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your background and how it relates to the position. If you haven’t worked in education, consider what skills or knowledge you gained from previous work that would be useful for this role.

Example: “I have never worked specifically in the education industry before, but I do have experience working with students as a tutor at my local library. 10. In some sessions, students will be unmotivated to learn, how would you approach this situation?

Example: “I would first try to understand why the student is unmotivated, then I would find a way to make learning fun for them. For example, if they are bored with their current lesson plan, I would suggest new ways of teaching that could help them learn more effectively. If they are unmotivated because they don’t like their tutor, I would ask them what they would prefer in a tutor and see if there’s anything I can do to improve my performance.”

11. Can you give us an example of a lesson plan you taught?

Interviewers may ask this question to learn more about your teaching style and how you plan lessons. To answer, think of a time when you created a lesson plan for a class or tutoring session. Explain what steps you took to create the plan and why you chose those steps.

Example: “I recently helped my friend’s daughter prepare for her AP English exam. She had been struggling with writing assignments in class, so I asked her teacher for some sample questions from past exams. Then, I met with my student to discuss her strengths and weaknesses. We decided that she needed to work on her vocabulary and sentence structure before tackling essay questions. So, we spent two weeks reviewing different types of sentences and learning new vocabulary words.”

12. What kind of feedback do you provide students when they are struggling?

This question can help interviewers understand how you provide constructive feedback to students and the strategies you use to encourage them to improve their performance.

Example: “I always start by asking my student what they think is causing them to struggle with a particular concept or skill. This helps me determine if there are any misconceptions that I need to address, which is often the case when students are struggling. Then, I explain the concept in different ways until they understand it fully. If they still have trouble after this, I will find an example of the concept from another source and show them how it works.”

13. As a tutor, you must be patient, can you tell us about a time when you were particularly patient?

14. Give me an example of a time where you improved upon a process/system/project.

This question is a great way to show your problem-solving skills and ability to adapt. When answering this question, it can be helpful to provide specific details about the process you improved and how it benefited the organization or company.

Students could also submit questions they had during class so their teacher could answer them immediately. This helped improve student engagement and overall learning.”

15. Sometimes our college students need extra help, if hired, are you prepared to assist them in their endeavors?

Example: “I have worked as an online tutor for several years, so I am very familiar with the challenges of being a student. In fact, many of my current clients are college students who need help with their assignments or test prep. 16. Tell me about a time where you went above and beyond for a client.

However, I do expect to receive at least 24 hours’ notice if I’m going to need to make any changes to my schedule.”

18. What is your philosophy on learning?

This question is an opportunity to show your passion for education and how you can apply it to the role. Your answer should include a personal story that demonstrates your commitment to helping others learn.

Example: “I believe learning is a lifelong process, so I try to make sure my students understand this as well. When I tutor, I always encourage them to ask questions and seek out answers on their own. This way, they develop confidence in their ability to solve problems and find solutions on their own. So, instead, I decided to focus on the introduction and conclusion of the essay while leaving the body untouched. This allowed me to meet the deadline without sacrificing quality.”
