What is your process for making a diagnosis?

Example: “I start by reviewing all of the information I have about the animal’s symptoms, including their medical history, current medications and any other details that may be relevant. Finally, I discuss my findings with the client and provide treatment options.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to give an animal a difficult diagnosis.

This question can allow you to demonstrate your problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe a specific situation in which you had to give an animal owner bad news about their pet’s health.

Example: “When I was working as a veterinary technician at my previous job, one of our clients brought in their dog for a routine checkup. During the exam, we noticed that the dog seemed to have trouble walking on his back legs. After running some tests, we determined that the dog had a spinal injury. The client was understandably upset by the diagnosis, but I explained everything to them so they could understand what was happening with their pet.”

If an animal was suffering from a mental illness, would you treat it the same way you would a physical illness?

This question is a good way to test your knowledge of mental illnesses in animals. It also shows the interviewer how you would handle an unusual situation. Your answer should show that you know how to treat both physical and mental illnesses in animals.

I would first try to find out what’s causing their anxiety and then treat it accordingly.”

What would you do if an animal’s owner was not following your treatment plan?

How well do you know the local wildlife?

They want to know how comfortable you are with handling different species of animals and whether or not you can adapt to new situations. In your answer, share a story about an exotic animal you worked with and what challenges you faced while treating it.

Example: “I’ve never worked with exotic animals before, but I am open to learning more about them. When I was volunteering at my local shelter, I met a woman who owned a hedgehog. She brought him into the clinic because he wasn’t eating well. After examining him, we determined that he had a small cut on his back leg. We treated him for the wound and gave him some food to eat. He returned home healthy.”

When is the best time to administer a vaccination?

This question can help the interviewer determine your knowledge of proper vaccination procedures. When answering, it can be helpful to mention a specific time and why you chose that time.

Example: “The best time to administer a vaccination is when an animal’s immune system is at its peak. This usually occurs between two and six months after birth. I always recommend administering vaccinations during this time because it helps ensure the vaccine will have the most positive effect on the animal’s health. If an owner misses this window, however, there are other times when vaccines can still be effective.”

Example: “I think one way we could improve our customer service is by making sure all staff members are aware of what information they need to share with clients when they bring pets in for checkups. This helps me ensure that I’m providing them with all the information they need about their pet’s health.”

Describe your process for performing a spay or neuter.

How often should pets see a veterinarian?
