To help you prepare, we’ve compiled a list of common WEX interview questions, along with sample answers to give you an idea of what to expect. With these questions and answers in hand, you’ll be one step closer to landing your dream job at WEX.

WEX Interview Process

The interview process at WEX can vary depending on the position you are applying for. However, most positions will require at least two interviews, one with a recruiter and one with a hiring manager. For some positions, you may also be required to take a coding test or participate in a presentation. The entire process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

1. Describe a time you were faced with an angry customer. How did you handle the situation?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your customer service skills. This is because you will likely have to interact with customers as a WEX employee, so it’s important that you can handle challenging situations. In your answer, try to show how you remain calm and collected in stressful situations.

Example: “I once had an angry customer who called me at my desk. I remained calm and listened carefully to what they were saying. After the call ended, I looked up their account information and found out why they were upset. I then called them back and apologized for not understanding the situation fully before. They accepted my apology and thanked me for taking the time to look into the issue.”

2. Tell me about yourself and why you want to work for WEX.

This question is a great way to start an interview because it gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and explain why you are qualified for the position. When answering this question, be sure to include your education background, work experience and any other relevant information that shows how you would fit in at WEX.

Example: “I graduated from the University of California with a degree in business administration. I have been working as a financial analyst for five years now, where I’ve learned about all aspects of finance including accounting, budgeting and risk management. I am looking for a new job because my current company has decided to downsize its staff, so I am hoping to find a new role where I can continue to use my skills.”

3. What do you know about our company?

This question is a great way to show your research skills and knowledge of the company. When you prepare for an interview, it’s important to learn as much about the company as possible. You can do this by reading through their website or doing some online research.

Example: “I know that Wex is one of the largest financial technology companies in the world. I also know that you have over 100 employees and are headquartered in New York City. I’ve read several articles on your business practices and am excited to be here today.”

4. Do you have experience working in software development? If so, what was your role?

This question is a great way to show your technical skills and knowledge of the software development process. If you have experience working in software development, explain what your role was and how it helped you develop your skills.

Example: “I worked as a software developer for five years at my previous company. I started out as an entry-level programmer but quickly moved up to senior level due to my hard work and dedication to learning new programming languages. My experience has given me valuable insight into the software development process and taught me how to solve problems with technology.”

5. Which programming languages are you familiar with?

This question is a great way to show your technical knowledge and experience with programming languages. If you have prior experience working in the financial sector, it can be beneficial to mention which programming language was used.

Example: “I am familiar with Java, C++, Python and Ruby. I worked as an IT specialist for a large corporation that required me to use these programming languages on a daily basis. In my current role, I work primarily with Java.”

6. Are you available to work overtime or on weekends if necessary?

Employers may ask this question to see if you’re willing to work outside of typical business hours. If your current job requires you to do so, be honest about it and explain why you’re able to do so. If not, consider explaining that you would be willing to do so in the future if necessary.

Example: “I’m available to work overtime or on weekends as needed. At my previous job, I was often asked to stay late or come in early for special projects. I understand that sometimes these things are unavoidable, but I am always happy to help out when possible.”

7. Explain how you would sell a product to a client who is hesitant to buy it.

This question is an opportunity to show your sales skills and how you can persuade clients to buy a product or service. Use examples from previous experiences where you successfully sold a client on a product or service.

Example: “I would first ask the client why they are hesitant to purchase the product. I would then explain the benefits of the product, including any additional features that may be beneficial to them. If the client still seems unsure about purchasing the product, I would offer to meet with them in person so we could discuss their concerns further.”

8. How much travel are you comfortable with?

Travel is a common part of working in the financial industry. Employers ask this question to make sure you’re willing to travel for work and how much you’re comfortable with. Before your interview, think about how far you’re willing to drive or fly for work. Consider what’s most important to you when it comes to traveling for work, like time away from home or money.

Example: “I’m happy to travel up to two hours each way for work. I understand that sometimes there are situations where I’ll need to travel longer distances. However, I would prefer not to do so unless absolutely necessary. I value my family time and want to be able to spend as much time at home as possible.”

9. Give us an example of when you had to come up with a solution on your own without help from others.

This question is a great way to show your problem-solving skills and ability to work independently. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe the steps you took to solve the issue and how you were able to come up with an effective solution on your own.

Example: “When I was working as a sales associate at a retail store, we had a customer who wanted to return a product that they had purchased two weeks prior. The company policy stated that all returns needed to be made within seven days of purchase. I knew there was no way for me to override the system, so I called my manager over to help me figure out what to do. Together, we decided that since the customer had proof of purchase, we would allow them to return the item.”

10. What do you like most about working in sales?

This question can help the interviewer get to know you as a person and how your personality might fit in with their company culture. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention something specific about yourself that relates to the job description or company values.

Example: “I love helping people find solutions to their problems. I’ve always been naturally curious about what other people are looking for and how I can help them find it. In my last role, I helped a customer who was looking for a new car find one that met all of their needs. They were so happy with the service they received from me that they told everyone they knew about our dealership.”

11. We pride ourselves on being able to provide excellent customer service. Have you ever dealt with a difficult customer? If so, how did you handle the situation?

Interviewers may ask this question to see how you handle conflict and whether you have experience working with customers. In your answer, try to demonstrate that you can be empathetic and use problem-solving skills to resolve issues.

Example: “I once had a customer who was upset because they didn’t receive their order on time. I listened to what they were saying and tried to understand why they were so frustrated. After learning more about the situation, I realized it was due to an error in shipping. I apologized for the inconvenience and offered them a discount on their next purchase.”

12. Why should we hire you over someone else?

This question is a great way to show your confidence and enthusiasm for the position. When answering this question, it can be helpful to highlight some of your most relevant skills or experiences that make you an ideal candidate.

Example: “I believe I am the best person for this role because of my extensive experience in customer service and my ability to work well with others. In my previous job as a call center representative, I was responsible for resolving customers’ issues over the phone. I found that by listening carefully to their concerns and empathizing with them, I could resolve many problems before they escalated. This helped me save the company money on training new employees.”

13. What do you think will be the biggest challenge in this position?

This question is a great way to assess how well you understand the role and what challenges it may have. When answering this question, be sure to highlight your ability to overcome obstacles and solve problems.

Example: “I think one of the biggest challenges in this position would be managing multiple projects at once. I am confident that my experience as a project manager will help me manage these tasks effectively. I also believe that my communication skills will allow me to collaborate with other team members to ensure we are all working toward the same goal.”

14. Who has been your favorite boss/manager and why?

This question is a great way to learn more about the company culture and how you might fit in. When answering, try to focus on what made your previous manager so great.

Example: “My favorite boss was my last one at my current job. She was always very encouraging and positive, which helped me feel confident in my work. I also appreciated that she would take time to explain things when I didn’t understand them. This helped me develop my skills and knowledge of the industry.”

15. Tell us about a time you had to make a decision that affected your team.

This question can help the interviewer get a better sense of how you make decisions and what your thought process is. Use this opportunity to highlight your leadership skills, decision-making abilities and ability to collaborate with others.

Example: “When I first started working at my previous company, we were tasked with creating a new app that would allow customers to pay for their purchases using their phones. We had a tight deadline, so I met with my team to discuss our options. After some discussion, we decided to use an existing platform instead of building one from scratch. This allowed us to meet our deadline while also providing a more seamless experience for our customers.”

16. What does good customer service mean to you?

Customer service is an important part of any business, and the interviewer may ask this question to see how you would apply your customer service skills in a work environment. When answering this question, it can be helpful to discuss what makes good customer service and how you have applied those principles in previous roles.

Example: “Good customer service means that I am always available to help my customers with their needs. It also means that I am empathetic to their situation and try to find solutions that are mutually beneficial for both parties. In my last role as a sales representative, I was responsible for managing a large client base, which required me to provide excellent customer service on a daily basis. I found that by being friendly and attentive to their needs, they were more likely to refer new clients to our company.”

17. How do you stay organized at work?

This question can help the interviewer get a sense of your organizational skills and how you plan your day. Your answer should include an example of how you use technology to stay organized, such as using a calendar or planner.

Example: “I have been using Google Calendar for years now, so I am very familiar with it. In my previous role, I was responsible for managing multiple projects at once, which required me to be highly organized. I used Google Calendar to create separate calendars for each project, allowing me to see all important deadlines in one place. This helped me manage my time more effectively.”

This question is an opportunity to show the interviewer that you are a valuable asset and can help WEX achieve its goals. Use your answer to highlight your skills, abilities and experience in relation to what WEX looks for in new hires.

19. Describe a time when you worked well under pressure.

When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe a time when you were able to complete an important task or project despite the pressure of time constraints. This can show employers that you are capable of working under pressure and may help them understand how you might handle similar situations in your new role.

Example: “In my previous position as a financial analyst, I was responsible for completing monthly reports on company finances. One month, I had to submit two reports at once—one for the board of directors and one for the shareholders. The shareholder report needed to include more detailed information than the board report, so I worked late into the night to ensure both reports were completed by the deadline.”

20. When working as part of a team, what qualities do you think each member should possess?

This question can help the interviewer understand your leadership skills and how you view teamwork. When answering, it can be helpful to mention a specific quality that you think is important for each team member.

Example: “I believe every member of a team should possess an eagerness to learn new things and take on challenges. I also think they should have confidence in their abilities and be willing to share their knowledge with others. Finally, I think it’s important that everyone has a positive attitude and is able to work well under pressure.”
