However, they insisted that we replace it.

I decided to send one of our technicians out to check the unit. He found that there was a loose wire in the system. The customer hadn’t noticed because he never turned it on.”

8. Describe a situation where you had to make a difficult decision without much direction from your manager.

This question can help interviewers understand how you make decisions and whether or not you have the ability to think critically. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe a situation where you had to use your own judgment and explain why you made that decision.

Example: “When I was working as an air quality specialist for my previous employer, we were tasked with creating a plan to reduce pollution in our city by 20% within five years. My manager gave us some guidelines on what they wanted us to accomplish, but ultimately left the rest up to us. We decided to focus on reducing emissions from vehicles first because those are typically the largest contributor of pollutants in most cities.
