Application Analyst vs. System Analyst: What Are the Differences?

Learn about the two careers and review some of the similarities and differences between them.

Application analysts and system analysts are both important roles in the world of information technology. Both positions require a high level of technical skills and knowledge, as well as the ability to effectively communicate with non-technical staff and users. However, there are some key differences between the two roles.

In this article, we’ll discuss the similarities and differences between application analysts and system analysts, and provide some tips on how to choose the right career path for you.

What is an Application Analyst?

Application Analysts work with software programs and applications to ensure they are functioning properly and meeting the needs of the company. They conduct tests, collect data and generate reports on their findings. Application Analysts also work with developers to create new applications or make changes to existing ones. They may also train users on how to use new or updated applications. Application Analysts typically have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. They also have experience working with the specific applications they support.

What is a System Analyst?

System Analysts are responsible for the maintenance and improvement of computer systems. They work with system users to identify and document system requirements. They also design, test and implement system solutions. In some cases, System Analysts may also be responsible for training system users on how to use new or updated systems. System Analysts typically work in the IT department of a company and liaise with other departments to ensure that system changes align with business goals. They also work with vendors to select and purchase system hardware and software.

Application Analyst vs. System Analyst

Here are the main differences between an application analyst and a system analyst.

Job Duties

Both application and system analysts have duties that involve researching a company’s needs, creating solutions to address those needs and testing their solutions. The primary difference is that application analysts focus on one specific product or service that a company offers, while system analysts look at the broader systems within an organization that need improvement. For example, a retail store may hire a system analyst to determine how they can improve customer satisfaction by better managing inventory and ensuring employees are following proper procedures. A application analyst might work for that same retail store but focus solely on improving the payment processing software so customers have an easier experience when shopping there.

Job Requirements

Application analysts and system analysts typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer science or another related field. They might also pursue certifications to show their employers that they have the skills needed to succeed in their roles. For example, application analysts might earn a Certified Associate in Software Development (CASD) certification from the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP). System analysts might pursue a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification from the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

Work Environment

System and application analysts typically work in different environments. System analysts often work for IT companies, where they may travel to clients’ locations to help them set up new systems or troubleshoot existing ones. They also may work in an office setting with other employees who support the company’s technology needs.

Application analysts usually work in a business environment, such as a marketing department or human resources department. They may work on-site at their client’s location or remotely from their employer’s offices.

Skills

Both application analysts and system analysts use analytical skills to assess a company’s needs and determine how best to address them. They also both need to have excellent problem-solving skills to identify issues and develop solutions that meet the company’s goals.

Application analysts typically work with software applications, so they need to have strong technical skills. They also need to be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff, as they may need to explain complex concepts to those who are not familiar with them. System analysts usually work with computer systems, so they too need strong technical skills. In addition, they often need to be able to lead teams of developers, so project management skills can be beneficial.

Salary

The average salary for an application analyst is $82,660 per year, while the average salary for a systems analyst is $89,211 per year. Both of these salaries can vary depending on the size of the company, the location of the job and the level of experience the analyst has.
