The Standard 90-Day Return Window
The standard return window for most purchased items, including makeup, is 90 days from the original purchase date. This timeframe applies when the shopper has a valid receipt or other verifiable proof of purchase. Ideally, the product should be in its original, unopened, and new condition.
Returning Opened or Used Cosmetics
The retailer generally accepts the return of opened or gently used beauty products. This policy benefits shoppers who experience a shade mismatch or an allergic reaction after initial application.
The return must be initiated within the standard policy timeframe, even if the product has been used. Shoppers should ensure that most original packaging components, such as the outer box, lid, or applicators, are included. The product should not be entirely empty or damaged beyond reasonable testing.
Extended Return Periods and Guarantees
Certain purchase methods and specific product lines offer extensions beyond the standard 90-day window. Shoppers using the Target RedCard (debit, credit, or reloadable) receive an additional 30 days for most returns. This extends the return period for general makeup purchases to 120 days from the purchase date.
A separate, year-long guarantee exists for all products under the retailer’s owned brands, such as Versed, Up & Up, or Smartly. This 365-day return period applies specifically to the quality and satisfaction of these house-brand items, even if the makeup has been opened and used.
Necessary Proof of Purchase and Logistics
A successful return requires verifiable documentation linking the shopper to the original transaction. Acceptable proof includes a physical paper receipt, a digital receipt via the mobile application, or the item’s barcode. If a receipt is unavailable, the purchase can often be looked up using the RedCard or a phone number linked to the shopper’s Target Circle account.
Returns can be processed in-store at the Guest Services desk or initiated through a mail-in process using a prepaid label generated online. A return with a receipt results in a refund to the original payment method. Returns without proof of purchase usually result in a non-transferable merchandise return card.
Items That Cannot Be Returned
The retailer will decline returns for cosmetic items under specific circumstances. Makeup purchased under final clearance or deep discount is often non-returnable.
Items that are returned completely empty or are missing substantial original components, such as the outer container or cap, may not be accepted. Furthermore, attempting a return significantly past the standard 90-day or any applicable extended window will result in denial, regardless of whether the product is opened or unopened.
